Advanced Pipe Welder

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Working in compliance with all safety, quality, environmental and health requirements, welding a variety of pipe configurations including, but not limited to:
  • Identifies and understands weld symbols and other drawing specifications related to welding
  • Wholly understands Austal USA vessel and part nomenclature
  • Proficiently performs to Austal USA construction guidelines and MIL-STD requirements as relates to welding per piping system

• Proficiently performs 1st time quality work on all types of fillet and groove welds
• Proficiently performs out of position and restricted welding for long durations
• Proficiently welds high quality and output for all positions and configurations without assistance
• Proficiently welds with mirror while maintaining first time quality
• Proficiently welds critical P1 and other vital systems with first time quality while maintaining output
• Proficiently welds all pipe thickness with first time quality, regardless of position, joint type or configuration
• Proficiently identifies and repairs failed UT or RT shots with a 98% pass rate
• Proficiently identifies all fitting defects prior to welding and corrects fitting defects prior to welding without assistance from a fitter
• Maintains a 98% RT pass rate on first attempt welds regardless of positions and with minimal guidance
• Continuous proficiency and throughput on all assigned tasks

• Pass and maintain an ABS GTAW 6GR Austal USA weld certification for copper nickel, carbon steel and stainless steel
• Pass and maintain an ABS GTAW and GMAW fillet Austal USA weld certification for aluminum
• Pass and maintain an ABS SMAW 6GR with backing ring Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
• Pass and maintain an ABS SMAW fillet Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
• Pass and maintain an ABS FCAW 6GR with backing Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
• Instructs and mentors less-skilled welders, as assigned
• Works with a sense of urgency, efficiency and productive output
• Maintains safe work practices and adheres to safety policies and procedures
• Ensures correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications
• Maintains housekeeping, keeps worksite free of rubbish, keeps materials and equipment stowed in an orderly manner
• Eliminates waste of consumables and material
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments
• Assists Welders, Fitters, Apprentices, and Trades Assistants with daily tasks as directed
• Assists or work with other trades (May be assigned tasks outside craft as required)
•   Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations and report deficiencies to supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

• Must currently be titled as and performing the role of an A Class Pipe Welder
• Minimum of 2 years of accumulated experience as an A Class Pipe Welder at Austal USA demonstrating proficiency in the following:
  • Demonstrates proficiency in identifying and understanding weld symbols and other drawing specifications related to welding
  • Demonstrates complete understanding of Austal USA vessel and part nomenclature
  • Demonstrates proficient performance to Austal USA construction guidelines and MIL-STD requirements as relates to welding per piping system

• Demonstrates proficient performance in 1st time quality work on all types of fillet and groove welds
• Demonstrates proficient performance out of position and restricted welding for long durations
• Proficiently welds high quality and output for all positions and configurations without assistance
• Demonstrates proficient welding with mirror while maintaining first time quality
• Demonstrates proficient welding of critical P1 and other vital systems with first time quality while maintaining output
• Demonstrates proficient welding of all pipe thickness with first time quality, regardless of position, joint type or configuration
• Demonstrates proficient identification of and ability to repair failed UT or RT shots with a 98% pass rate
• Demonstrates proficient identification of all fitting defects prior to welding and corrects fitting defects prior to welding without assistance from a fitter
• Maintains a 98% RT pass rate on first attempt welds regardless of positions and with minimal guidance
• Demonstrates continuous proficiency and throughput on all assigned tasks

•   Must possess an ABS GTAW 6GR Austal USA weld certification for copper nickel, carbon steel and stainless steel
• Must possess an ABS GTAW fillet Austal USA weld certification for aluminum
• Pass and maintain an ABS SMAW 6GR with backing ring Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
• Pass and maintain an ABS SMAW fillet Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
• Pass and maintain an ABS FCAW 6GR with backing Austal USA weld certification for carbon steel.
•   Must maintain Level II VT qualifications
• Must have demonstrated a high level of pride in workmanship
• Must not have any disciplinary documents for safety or workmanship for the last year
• Demonstrates an ability to take direction and follow instructions
• Demonstrates good mechanical aptitude with an ability to produce consistent quality
• Demonstrates willingness to repair another welder’s work
• Good listening and communication skills
• Demonstrates an ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Demonstrates problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
• Excellent hand-eye coordination; good spatial orientation
• Demonstrates an ability to consistently meet production deadlines
• Ability to read and interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer’s handbooks, change orders and contract specifications to obtain weld sizing information and material edge preparation requirements
• Demonstrates an ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workers
• Demonstrates an ability to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment
• Ability to work shifts or overtime as required to support Company needs
• Must keep occurrences at 4 or below
• Ability to wear required PPE
• Performs all duties with minimal guidance

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit. 

Specific physical requirements include the following:

Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel. Perform prolonged standing. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
