Job Title - Advanced Practitioner Provider Manager (NP), Newborn Medicine- Mount Sinai Hospital -Full Time - Day

The APN Manager is responsible for delivering operational leadership to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in the Division of Newborn Medicine, fostering clinical integration, optimizing workflows and supporting excellence in advanced practice care. The APP Manager supervises and directs a team of 15-25 full-time, part-time and per diem Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Hospitalists alongside either the Wellbaby Nursery (WBN) medical director or the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) APP Team medical director as well as the Division Chief. These APPs are frontline providers for patients in the WBN or NICU. Their responsibilities include admitting patients to their respective units, providing the relevant clinical care based on diagnosis and treatment plan, participating in academically oriented rounds, performing procedures, and discharging patients. They will work alongside housestaff and be supervised by neonatal faculty and fellows. Other APP responsibilities include attendance at deliveries in the Labor and Delivery Unit and performing NRP as well as occasional assistance in transport of patients to/from the MSH NICU.

 

Alongside the medical leadership, the Advanced Practice Provider Manager: 

  • Supervises the optimization of APP clinical practice for the delivery of health care to patients while promoting a culture of patient-centered care that emphasizes service and compassion. 

  • Serves as a liaison to nursing, medicine, department chairs/chiefs. 

  • Ensures APPs meet institutional compliance with regulatory agencies. 

  • Is responsible for overseeing administrative operations related to designated APPs, including workflow optimization and scheduling. 

  • While the APP Manager provides leadership in administrative domains, clinical oversight and accountability for APP practice remain under the purview of the designated MD supervisor.
     



Responsibilities

In collaboration with medical leadership, domain-specific responsibilities include: 

Clinical Practice
1. Assesses the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination.
2. Initiates selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings and alters plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines.
3. Educates and counsels in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses. 
4. Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record.
5. Consults with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
6. Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.
7. Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
8. Performs a patient record review with the collaborating physician in a timely fashion but not less than every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement.
9. Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and the bylaws of the Hospital Staff.
10. Maintains current expertise in area of practice.
        
Administrative
1. Collaborates with the Chief of the Division of Newborn Medicine, Medical Director of the WBN, Medical Director of the Neonatal APPs, and Director of Advanced Practice Providers in the recruitment, retention, and human resource management of APPs assigned to the division.
2. Evaluates APP staff performance. Mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff up to and including termination. 
3. Manages, guides and monitors APPs related to scheduling, assignments, and coordination of services. 
4. Maintains control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
5. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures.
6. Facilitates the on-boarding and orientation as well as ongoing professional development of APPs.
7. Coordinates clinical activities of APPs to accomplish established safety and quality measures. 
8. Provides leadership and develops effective team building. 
9. Sets departmental goals in collaboration with division chief and other key personnel.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to service excellence; role models Mount Sinai Service Standards.
11. Participates in relevant hospital-wide committees.
12. Reviews FPPE/OPPE of APPs within the Division of Newborn Medicine. 
13. Engages with collaborating physicians, division chief and department administrators to ensure that clinical practice systems are supportive of clinical care. 
14. Promotes utilization of APPs to optimize their scope of clinical practice.

 

Professional Practice
1. Supports and role models the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of the Department of Nursing, The Divison of Newborn Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics and the Mount Sinai Hospital System. 
2. Promotes own professional growth and development in clinical and managerial role.
3. Participates in the development and monitoring of patient outcomes per established practice protocols for purposes of quality and performance improvement.
4. Serves as a clinical role model and resource to the nursing and clinical staff.
5. Serves as a professional resource to other members of the health care team.
6. Uses evidence-based health care literature to advise and support appropriate practice changes within the designated service.
7. Participates in Newborn Medicine Quality and Performance Improvement meetings.
8. Participates in APP related meetings and committees.
9. Demonstrates professional involvement by:   
    A. Attending and participating in workshops, seminars, and courses as presenter or author.
    B. Keeping abreast of current literature and trends in practice.
    C. Participating in related professional organizations.
10. Considers ethical issues in professional APP practice. 
11. Treats co-workers, patients and families with dignity and respect.
12. Maintains attendance and punctuality record in accordance with departmental standards.
13. Adheres to dress code in accordance with departmental policy.



Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nursing required.

  • DNP preferred.

  • 5+ years minimum of relevant clinical advanced practice nursing.

  • Previous Nursing leadership and management experience preferred. 

  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Current certification and registration as a Nurse Practitioner in New York State.

  • Current license and registration as a Professional Registered Nurse in NY State.

  • National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required.

  • Credentialed and privileged as APN at the respective site of practice.

 

 

Compensation Statement

 

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $127,044.00 - $190,565.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
