Afterschool Activity Specialist - Cambria COMPASS Center

Position Summary

The Southern Queens Parks Association is looking for a dynamic individuals to join the team as an Activity Specialist at the Cambria COMPASS Center afterschool program. They should show expertise in one or more disciplines or content-specific program activities or subjects such as dance, drama, STEAM, sports (typical and playground games), or other activity or subject that enriches the experiences of children and youth. The Activity Specialist is responsible for creating age-appropriate activities and to also monitor student progress. The Activity Specialist also provides academic support to meet the specific needs of students. The instructor will be responsible for developing lesson plans and implementing activities in accordance with the safety rules and regulations that coincide with departmental rules, regulations, and safety practices.

This innovative program serves elementary-aged youth through structured, club-style programming designed to promote academic success, personal development, and leadership skills. Programming includes enrichment in the arts, sports, youth leadership, and experiential learning throughout NYC. The program operates five days a week during the school year and offers extended services during the summer. This site functions under SQPA’s broader mission and benefits from the organization’s rich network of facilities, programs, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides general supervision of students during program operating times and ensures that the participants are always safe; Keep all activities, equipment, and facilities clean, sanitized, safe, and in working order.


• Provides positive feedback on the students’ progress and encourages students continued progress towards academic excellence and accountability. Presents themselves as a role model for student participants, at all times.


• Keep all activities, equipment, and facilities clean, sanitized, safe, and in working order in compliance with program guidelines and procedures.


• Promote independent growth by encouraging critical thinking, working in partnerships, and collaborative groups.


• Understands, articulates, and utilizes the DYCD core competencies in conjunction with instruction and planning.


• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.


• Maintains regular open communication with parents, staff, and direct supervisors; Report any incidents and concerns to the assistant site program director and site program director.


• Perform other projects assigned at the discretion of the assistant site program director and site program director. 

Essential Functions:

• Implement the After School curriculum, helping scholars to improve literacy competencies, values and physical fitness in an activity-based after school environment.


• Ensure the health, safety and well-being of scholars in the program by providing close supervision of all activities


• Maintain accurate program documentation
  


• Plan and create innovative age-appropriate activities and develop lesson plans to conduct them on a daily basis

Schedule

Includes 13 full program days during the academic year (7–8-hour shifts on these days)

Job Type: Part-time (In-Person)
Compensation: $20 per hour
⏳ Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours per week
