Job Description - Assistant Chief Nursing Officer

Position Summary:


Serves as the senior nursing executive for the facility and is responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, and


clinical leadership of all nursing services. Provides oversight for Emergency Services, Inpatient Services, Surgical Services,


Perioperative Services, Procedural Areas, Quality, Patient Safety, Regulatory Readiness, and Nursing Operations.


Responsible for achieving exceptional patient outcomes, regulatory compliance, employee engagement, physician


collaboration, and operational excellence.




Key Responsibilities:


· Provides executive oversight for hospital quality outcomes, nursing-sensitive indicators, patient safety initiatives,


infection prevention collaboration, and regulatory readiness.


· Leads preparation and successful execution of Joint Commission, AHCA, CMS, DNV, and other regulatory surveys.


· Develops corrective action plans and ensures sustained compliance with accreditation standards.


· Reviews quality dashboards, core measures, mortality, readmissions, patient safety indicators, hospital-acquired


conditions, and patient experience metrics.


· Provides operational leadership for Emergency Department throughput, patient flow, boarding reduction, left-


without-being-seen initiatives, and emergency preparedness.


· Partners with physician leadership to improve door-to-provider times, admission conversion rates, sepsis, and stroke


performance.


· Provides executive oversight of Surgical Services, Pre-Op, PACU, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, and procedural


areas.


· Monitors block utilization, first case on-time starts, turnover times, cancellation rates, implant utilization, and


operating room productivity.


· Oversees all inpatient nursing units including Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, ICU, Observation, and specialty units.


· Responsible for staffing optimization, patient throughput, length of stay, discharge planning collaboration, and


nursing productivity.


· Develops and manages nursing operating and capital budgets.


· Responsible for labor productivity, overtime management, agency utilization, premium pay reduction, and supply


expense management.


· Develops collaborative relationships with physicians to improve communication, patient outcomes, and service line


growth.


· Partners with Medical Staff leadership to address quality concerns and operational opportunities.


· Builds a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.


· Coaches, mentors, and develops nursing directors and managers.


· Creates succession plans and develops future nursing leaders.


· Analyzes productivity reports and implements action plans to achieve financial targets.


· Collaborates with surgeons to improve physician satisfaction and surgical growth.


· Monitors and maximize bed availability and patient throughput utilizing Meditech bed board; works collaboratively


with all patient care areas to maximize throughput initiatives.


· Promotes systems thinking as a value in the nursing organization.


· Supports the development and implementation of an organization-wide patient safety program.


· Ensures performance evaluations are done in a timely manner, along with all mandatory education.


· Collaborates with Directors to analyze and maintain financial controls of supply utilization and staffing utilization


within each nursing department.


· Works collaboratively with quality department to ensure compliance to core measures, nurse sensitive indicators and other quality indicators. · Works with nursing directors to create and maintain a state of constant regulatory compliance and TJC readiness.


· Monitors performance of per-diem employees assigned to Nursing Administration in accordance with all policies and procedures · Allocates nursing resources based on measurement of patient acuity/care needed.


· Proactively conducts department rounds and reports findings related to Physical Environment to Safety Officer or other responsible personnel, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory resolution/closure.


· Participates with Coral Gables Hospital Physical Environment Team during their scheduled rounds, reviews findings, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory closure.


· Complies with Coral Gables Hospital infection control initiatives including departmental hand-washing monitoring/compliance.


· Provides department-specific training for new employees and once annually for current employees that addresses specific employee expectations and responsibilities regarding fire drills/safety, disaster response, unit security, clinical equipment use, and hazardous waste disposal.


· Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement of service and care.


· Ensures rounding on all patients is conducted each shift; actively participates in patient rounding.


· Communicates and collaborates with other departments in addressing patient care issues


· Participates in performance improvement teams as assigned; develops and implements strategies to ensure PI compliance.


· Attends and actively participates in medical staff and hospital committees and meetings, as assigned.


· Participates in hospital wide patient experience initiatives and monitors scores i.e. HCAHPS compliance and patient experience committee.


· Monitors and assures core measure/quality indicators compliance on unit and/or department.


· Always assures state of regulatory readiness on assigned unit and/or department.


· Assures timely review and turnaround of concurrent data and drill down.


· Achieves Compliance with State, Federal, Joint Commission regulations and standards.


· Exhibits high ethical standards and integrity.


· Reports all potential compliance issues as per Regulatory Compliance Policy


· Participates and contributes actively to patient safety and implements all patient safety activities.


· Interacts with co-workers in a positive and cooperative manner, promotes teamwork.


· Always maintains confidentiality as appropriate.


· Resolves conflict in a professional manner seeks guidance through the chain of command.


· Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Refrains from using negative comments about Hospital, co-workers, patients and/or physicians.


Required Knowledge & Skills


Graduate from an approved nursing educational program as defined by the National Council of State Boards of


Nursing (NCSBN) with a bachelor's degree, in Nursing or related field required.


Education/Experience/Licensure/Technical/Other:




I. Education bachelor's degree, in Nursing or related field required. Master's degree, in Nursing or related field


preferred


II. Experience (Type & Length): Minimum ten (10) years in nursing experience in an acute care hospital. Minimum


two (2) years in a Director, Administrative Director, Assistant CNO, Associate CNO, VP of Nursing, or Chief


Nursing Officer role. Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing Emergency Department, Inpatient Services,


and Surgical Services. Demonstrated success leading Joint Commission, AHCA/CMS, or DNV surveys. Proven


experience improving quality outcomes, patient experience, nursing productivity, and financial performance.


Experience managing multiple nursing departments in a community acute care hospital preferred.


III. Software/Hardware: Proficiency in Microsoft applications and Meditech

Association) Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (American Heart Association)
