Job Description - Assistant Controler

Angott Search Group is pleased to partner with a respected credit union in the search for an Assistant Controller. This position plays a key leadership role within the Accounting department, overseeing daily accounting operations, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and internal controls while supporting the Controller and broader organization.

Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the monthly close process, including general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, balance sheet and income statement preparation.
  • Oversee monthly analysis of loan participations, investments, and derivatives, including related journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Oversee preparation of regulatory filings, including NCUA Call Reports.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and professional development.
  • Provide guidance on complex accounting matters and serve as an escalation point for departmental issues.
  • Lead or support budgeting processes, including operating expenses and non-interest income, as well as variance analysis.
  • Prepare dividend recommendations and monthly financial performance narratives and visual reporting.
  • Coordinate preparation for audits and regulatory examinations and work with internal and external auditors.
  • Manage loan analytics systems, including reconciliation of loan balances, charge-offs, delinquency data, and related reporting.
  • Assist with oversight of ACH operations, including business account onboarding, NACHA compliance, file submissions, returns, exceptions, and fraud claims.
  • Assist with oversight of check returns and wire processing, including resolution of returned items and fraud claims.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Minimum of five years of accounting or financial experience, including at least two years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Familiarity with credit union operations, regulatory requirements, Federal Reserve systems, ACH, and check-clearing processes.
  • Understanding of financial planning, budgeting, and analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and financial analysis.
  • Experience with automated accounting and electronic delivery systems.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and identify process improvements.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting concepts to non-accounting staff.
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain composure in a deadline-driven environment.
  • CPA licensure or MBA preferred.
