Position Summary


The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and supports the day-to-day accounting operations for a multi-site chain of childcare centers. This role assists with the accumulation and consolidation of financial data, helps maintain strong internal controls, and supervises accounting staff as needed. The Assistant Controller is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and comfortable working across a distributed, multi-site organization, stepping in to manage core accounting functions in the Controller's absence.

Key Responsibilities



  • Assist the Controller with month-end and year-end close of the income statement and balance sheet, including account reconciliations and G/L analysis

  • Support cash management activities and help prepare cash-flow reports, including inputs for the 13-week rolling forecast

  • Help evaluate, implement, and streamline accounting policies, procedures, controls, and methodologies

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for Controller review

  • Partner with operations teams across center locations to support day-to-day accounting needs and financial accuracy

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and forecasts, and support monthly monitoring against budget

  • Support the accounts payable, invoicing, and collections functions, and help produce weekly operating reports to the field

  • Assist with research, testing, and rollout of Finance Department initiatives, including software and systems implementation

  • Help monitor financial performance and identify opportunities to reduce costs

  • Support the evaluation and improvement of internal control systems

  • Assist with regulatory reporting, including support for tax planning and compliance activities

  • Help maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws and business regulations

  • Assist in developing internal control guidelines, policies, and procedures for budgeting, cash and credit management, and administration

  • Support risk analysis reporting across financial aspects of the company

  • Assist in maintaining and reconciling the company general ledger

  • Support the Controller with financial analysis related to capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations

  • Prepare requested schedules and documentation for external auditors during the annual audit

  • Help maintain internal safeguards over revenue receipts, costs, and departmental budgets versus actual expenditures

  • Supervise, train, and support accounting staff (e.g., AP/AR, staff accountants) as assigned

  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including acting on behalf of the Controller as needed


Qualifications



  • Strong technology, analytics, and organizational skills required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Products such as Excel and PowerPoint required

  • Experience with Sage 100 and BizInsight a plus

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; prior experience in a senior accountant, accounting manager, or assistant controller role preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required; CPA or progress toward CPA a plus

  • Self-starter with strong time management, organizational, and communication skills

  • Strong analytical and quantitative data analysis skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects within strict deadlines

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and exercise sound judgment

  • Ability to build and deliver clear presentations and reports to varied audiences

  • Prior experience in public accounting is a plus

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-pressure, multi-site environment
