Powered by FUTURES, the Courage Museum is a first-of-its-kind educational and cultural institution located on the Main Post of San Francisco’s Presidio. Opening in Spring 2027, the Courage Museum is designed in partnership with the award-winning experience design firm Local Projects, and in collaboration with the award-winning documentary film production company Actual Films, as well as accomplished subject matter experts in neuroscience, history, youth development, and education, among others.

The Courage Museum
challenges visitors to rethink how and why violence occurs and its reciprocal effect on individuals, families, communities, and societies. Through immersive learning and storytelling experiences, the Museum engages visitors in a journey of self-discovery and transformative learning, encouraging them to reflect on their own ideas about violence and pathways to individual and collective courage.

OVERVIEW: 

The Assistant Director will support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of Generation Courage (Gen C) – working under the direction of the Managing Director of Education – to translate the museum’s education strategy into high-quality youth programs, partnerships, and learning experiences. Through a range of programs such as the Youth Advisory Council, FIERCE Girls, Undergraduate Internship, and emerging school and community partnerships, Gen C activates young people to develop empathy, agency, and leadership and contribute to healthier and safer communities in California and nationally.

Location/Work Environment: This role is based at the Courage Museum in the Presidio of San Francisco and operates in a hybrid in-person/remote environment. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for student showcases, museum events, and youth program activities. The ideal candidate brings flexibility, creativity, sound judgment, and curiosity to a collaborative, mission-driven workplace.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

About the Role

Working under the direction of the Managing Director of Education, the Assistant Director of Generation Courage will support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Courage Museum’s youth leadership portfolio. This role translates the museum’s educational strategy into strong programs, partnerships, youth engagement systems, and learning experiences. This position requires an experienced and resourceful educator or youth-development professional who can work effectively across diverse settings including high schools, colleges and universities, community-based organizations, other youth-serving institutions, and philanthropic partners.

The Assistant Director will manage multiple youth-facing programs and partnerships (e.g., Youth Advisory Council, FIERCE Girls), ensuring that initiatives are well-organized, youth-centered, responsive to community needs, and aligned with the museum’s broader educational vision. The Assistant Director will also support the sustainability and growth of Gen C. This includes helping shape fundable program concepts, contributing to grant proposals and reports, preparing funder-facing updates, participating in funder meetings, and gathering program outcomes that demonstrate impact.

The successful candidate will bring sound judgment and move comfortably among strategy, relationship building, and hands-on implementation. This includes co-developing initiatives, cultivating institutional partnerships, facilitating young people, managing grant-funded projects, as well as navigating the sensitive issues, competing priorities, and day-to-day challenges that come with collaboratively designing and implementing new programs.


Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership

• Collaborate with Courage Museum colleagues to align youth programming with exhibitions, campaigns, educational resources, and events


• Support the design, delivery, and evaluation of Gen C programs, including the Youth Advisory Council, FIERCE Girls, Undergraduate Internship, and emerging school and community partnerships


• Help design and launch new programs and partnerships that advance the museum’s objectives and respond to opportunities identified with young people and community partners


• Contribute to annual goals and outcomes aligned with the museum’s strategic priorities


• Manage program workplans, timelines, budgets, grant deliverables, and other resources needed for successful implementation


• Manage continuous improvement cycles, collecting feedback, evaluating outcomes, and iterating programs for greater quality, reach, and impact

Youth & Community Engagement

• Supervise and support youth participants during on-site and virtual programming, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and creative learning environment


• Design recruitment and onboarding systems that ensure broad access and participation for people from all backgrounds


• Create meaningful opportunities for young people to help shape, test, and lead museum programs and initiatives


• Build and sustain youth leadership pathways, from participant to alumni mentor and other leadership opportunities


• Cultivate and manage relationships with high schools, colleges and universities, community-based organizations, youth-serving institutions, funders, and local leaders


• Collaborate with partners from different organizational cultures, priorities, and needs to identify shared goals and develop effective working relations


• Represent the museum, as appropriate, at community, educational, philanthropic, and professional gatherings – positioning the museum as a trusted partner in youth leadership and civic engagement


• Implement applicable child safeguarding practices, mandated reporting protocols, and youth safety procedures in all programs serving minors
  
  

Fundraising & Sustainability

• Support the Managing Director of Education in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding funding opportunities for Gen C


• Help shape fundable program concepts, including clear goals, outcomes, budgets, timelines, and implementation plans


• Contribute to grant proposals, concept notes, funder updates, reports, and other materials that communicate the purpose and impact of Gen C programs


• Participate, as appropriate, in meetings, presentations, and events with funders, donors, and other external stakeholders


• Support fundraising events, youth showcases, donor briefings, and other opportunities that connect supporters to the work of young people


• Track program outcomes, participant feedback, youth stories, and other evidence of impact needed for grant reporting and funder stewardship

• The Courage Museum becomes known as a trusted, inspiring partner for youth development in the Bay Area, California, and nationally


• Gen C develops a strong and coherent portfolio of youth programs and partnerships with K-12 schools, postsecondary institutions, educators, funders, and youth-serving organizations


• Youth participants demonstrate measurable growth in agency, empathy, and leadership


• Young people have meaningful opportunities to influence and contribute to the museum’s educational work


• Gen C has clear evidence of youth impact, program quality, and community relevance that can be shared with funders, donors, and partners


• Programs operate on time and within budget, with consistent feedback loops and data-informed improvement cycles

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in education, youth development, nonprofit programming, community engagement, philanthropy, or a related field, including experience designing and implementing programs


• Demonstrated experience working in and across multiple systems including K-12 education, postsecondary education, community-based organizations, philanthropy, and other youth-serving institutions


• Significant experience working directly with young people and building positive relationships with diverse groups of youth, educators, school administrators, community partners, and organizational leaders


• Deep understanding of positive youth development, healing-centered engagement, social-emotional learning, and youth leadership development


• Demonstrated ability to build and sustain partnerships among organizations and individuals with different priorities, perspectives, and ways of working


• Experience supporting fundraising-related activities, such as grant proposals, funder reports, donor stewardship, philanthropic partnerships, or program impact materials


• Ability to translate program work into clear funder-facing language, including goals, outcomes, budgets, participant stories, and evaluation findings


• Comfort participating in meetings or presentations with funders, donors, community partners, and other external stakeholders, in collaboration with museum and Development colleagues


• Proven project management, organizational, and analytic skills, including experience administering grant-funded programs, budgets, timelines, and deliverables


• Excellent written, verbal, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills


• Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and ability to plan ahead, collaborate effectively, and maintain high-quality work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities


• Master’s degree in Education, Youth Development, or related field required


• Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking) preferred

SALARY/BENEFITS:

This is a full-time exempt position. The salary is $117,500/annually, which is based on a standardized compensation structure that is transparent across the organization. Please note that the salary is non-negotiable and, like all positions at FUTURES, eligible for step increases as part of our commitment to thriving wages for all staff.
