Work Environment
The Assistant Layout Superintendent works in a dynamic, field-driven construction environment that blends outdoor jobsite activities with office-based coordination and digital modeling. This role requires frequent presence on active construction sites, where the individual uses GPS, robotic total stations, and optical leveling equipment to perform precise layout and verification tasks for civil and structural elements. At the same time, the position involves significant collaboration with project superintendents, engineers, architects, and surveyors, often requiring the use of BIM platforms such as Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD Civil 3D to interpret and generate layout data. The work environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, demanding strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to maintain accuracy under pressure. Regular travel between job sites is common, and the role requires balancing hands-on fieldwork with technical drafting, data management, and communication responsibilities to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and within established quality and budget standards.

The individual must be capable of lifting and carrying surveying equipment, tools, and materials (often weighing up to 50 pounds) and performing repetitive motions such as bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Visual acuity is essential for reading construction drawings, operating precision instruments, and identifying layout points with a high degree of accuracy. The role may also require extended periods of screen time for drafting and modeling tasks. Additionally, the position demands the ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation, while maintaining focus, safety awareness, and productivity throughout the workday.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time non-union position. The scheduled hours are 40 to 50 hours per week Monday through Friday but may be extended as required to execute the tasks assigned.
Travel
This position requires frequent travel. The Assistant Layout Superintendent routinely travels to and from the office, job sites/projects, meetings, supplier/sub-contractor locations, etc.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field; at least three years of experience in land surveying, civil construction, or related construction fields; and a minimum of one year of hands-on experience in general construction.
