Job Summary
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing all daily operations of the Meat Department. This position helps ensure exceptional customer service, food safety compliance, sales growth, inventory control, quality standards, and associate development. The Assistant Meat Manager leads by example, promotes a positive work environment, and helps maintain an organized, clean, and profitable department.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing the daily operation of the Meat Department.
- Ensure all products are properly stocked, rotated, displayed, and signed.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, and presentation standards.
- Maintain department cleanliness and organization in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Support implementation of merchandising plans, promotions, and seasonal programs.
Customer Service
- Deliver outstanding customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, preparation suggestions, and special requests.
- Resolve customer concerns professionally and promptly.
- Promote a culture focused on customer satisfaction.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, health, and safety regulations.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, rotation, and temperature control of products.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and regulatory standards.
- Support department readiness for inspections and audits.
Inventory & Financial Performance
- Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory management.
- Help control shrink, waste, and departmental expenses.
- Monitor product movement and maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Support achievement of sales, margin, and profitability goals.
Leadership & Team Development
- Help supervise, train, and develop department associates.
- Promote accountability, teamwork, and a positive work environment.
- Assist with scheduling and daily task delegation.
- Provide coaching and performance feedback to associates.
- Serve as manager-on-duty for the department when the Meat Manager is absent.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous meat department or retail grocery experience required.
- Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of meat products, merchandising, food safety, and inventory management.
- Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift throughout scheduled shifts.
- Frequently lift and carry products weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work in refrigerated environments for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate department equipment and tools.
