Job Overview
A leading healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Assistant Supervisor to support the clinical, technical, and operational functions of its hospital laboratory during the overnight shift.
This hands-on leadership role combines staff supervision, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, employee training, and routine bench testing. The Assistant Supervisor will help ensure accurate and timely test results, maintain laboratory performance standards, and provide guidance to laboratory personnel throughout the shift.
The ideal candidate will be a licensed New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist with at least four years of hospital laboratory experience and strong leadership, troubleshooting, and quality-control skills.
Responsibilities
Supervise laboratory testing and daily department operations during the overnight shift
Perform routine and specialized bench testing regularly and when additional staffing support is needed
Ensure laboratory services meet hospital policies and regulatory and accreditation standards
Train and assist laboratory personnel with routine and specialized testing procedures
Verify that employees are properly trained and deemed proficient before independently testing patient specimens
Oversee staff orientation, annual competencies, continuing education, and ongoing training requirements
Address performance concerns and implement corrective action when competency standards are not met
Document new test implementation, validation, employee training, and competency completion
Oversee the laboratory quality-control program and prepare monthly quality-control reports
Submit interlaboratory comparisons and proficiency documentation when required
Review quality-control results, instrument maintenance records, and quality-assurance activities
Monitor test-system performance and initiate preventive or corrective action when results fall outside established specifications
Ensure patient results are not released until testing nonconformities have been resolved
Escalate quality concerns, nonconformities, and operational issues to laboratory leadership and the Medical Director
Monitor turnaround times for applicable laboratory assays
Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions and coordinate with vendors to resolve equipment concerns
Assist with laboratory software development, instrument interfacing, test configuration, worksheets, and report formatting
Maintain appropriate inventory levels and order laboratory supplies as needed
Prepare section payroll records and employee time sheets
Assist with departmental goals, objectives, and performance-improvement initiatives
Participate in candidate interviews and employee selection
Support hospital initiatives and participate in committees, projects, and task forces when appropriate
Promote strong communication, positive employee relations, and excellent customer service
Maintain a safe environment for patients and employees
Complete other related responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology, or a related scientific field
Minimum of four years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist
At least four years of relevant hospital laboratory experience
Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license
Strong knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance
Ability to train, evaluate, and support laboratory personnel
Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities
High level of proficiency in laboratory regulatory and accreditation requirements
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong customer service, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work the overnight schedule and alternating weekends and holidays
Preferred
Four to six years of hospital laboratory experience
Previous lead, charge, assistant supervisor, or supervisory laboratory experience
ASCP certification
National Credentialing Agency certification
Experience troubleshooting laboratory instruments and working directly with equipment vendors
Experience with laboratory information systems, instrument interfacing, and test implementation
