Job Description - Associate Research Physicist-Strategic Science Initiative(Theory)

Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks an Associate Research Physicist to join the Equilibrium, Transport, and Confinement Theory group in the PPPL Theory Department. The successful candidate will participate in the development and application of world-leading magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models to important challenges in magnetic fusion energy, especially regarding disruptions or other large-scale instabilities. This high-impact research will be conducted as part of a large multi-institutional effort to address and mitigate the risks of abrupt confinement loss in magnetic fusion power plants.

A U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, PPPL is tackling the world’s toughest science and technology challenges using plasma, the fourth state of matter. With more than 70 years of history, PPPL is a leader in the science and engineering behind the development of fusion energy, a potentially limitless energy source. PPPL is also using its expertise to advance research in the areas of microelectronics, quantum sensors and devices, and sustainability sciences. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to contribute to our mission and vision. Come join us!

Responsibilities

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for developing, validating, and applying models of physical phenomena in the M3D-C1 MHD code and related analysis software.  Physical models under consideration could include models for runaway electrons, impurities, thermal transport, or other phenomena of importance to disruption physics.  These models will be used as part of a large, multi-institutional effort to quantify and mitigate risks from abrupt confinement loss, and this role will involve coupling or interpreting the M3D-C1 results in the context of a range of analysis from the broader team.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with experts to accelerate and optimize M3D-C1 through GPU acceleration and/or the use of AI/ML methods.

More broadly, the successful candidate would be a team member in the Equilibrium, Transients, and Control Theory group in the PPPL Theory department, and would have the opportunity to interact with leading experts in the field of fusion energy research.

Core Duties:

  • Development of MHD codes and related analysis codes (30%)
  • Application of MHD codes to model disruptions or confinement loss events (35%)
  • Participation in group meetings (5%)
  • Dissemination of results through publications and presentations (15%)
  • Pursuing novel ideas and new research directions (15%)

Qualifications

  • PhD in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related field
  • Familiarity with magnetohydrodynamics and instabilities in tokamaks and stellarators
  • Programming experience in Fortran, C/C++, or Python
  • Ability to carry out research independently and as part of a large, diverse team
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written presentations / publications
