Automotive Shop Foreman

Purpose of the Position:

The Shop Foreman will oversee the day-to-day operations of the service department, ensuring the efficient, effective, and high-quality repair and maintenance of customer vehicles. This role involves supervising the repair shop team, ensuring that all service work is completed to dealership and manufacturer standards, and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.

Essential Job Functions:

• Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of automotive technicians, ensuring they are well-trained, motivated, and adhering to all safety and quality standards.
  Delegate tasks to technicians based on skill levels, work priorities, and job requirements.
  Monitor employee performance and conduct regular performance reviews.


• Oversee the repair process to ensure that all work meets the dealership’s standards for quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Perform final inspections of completed jobs to ensure proper execution and compliance with repair guidelines.  Address any rework or concerns related to completed jobs.


• Coordinate the daily work schedule for technicians, ensuring timely completion of all repairs and services. Ensure that repair orders are properly documented and accurate, including the proper assignment of labor times and parts usage.
  Monitor job status, ensure efficiency, and resolve any workflow issues or bottlenecks.


• Communicate with service advisors, customers, and management to ensure clear understanding of service needs, expectations, and timelines. Address customer concerns related to vehicle repairs and service quality as needed, aiming for prompt and satisfactory resolution.


• Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for the team to keep up with industry advancements, new vehicle technologies, and best practices. Ensure that technicians are cross-trained on multiple vehicle makes and models as required.


• Enforce safety policies and practices in the shop to ensure a safe working environment for all employees. Maintain proper documentation for warranty, service records, and other required paperwork. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, waste disposal, and hazardous materials handling.


• Assist in managing shop productivity reports, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing corrective actions as needed. Collaborate with the Service Manager to set department goals, track performance, and help ensure the dealership meets service revenue targets.

Daily Tasks:

• Be at work station ready to start work at assigned time


• Use dealer management system to track and document repairs


• Assists technicians in developing their skills.


• Understands and ensures compliance with manufacturer warranty and policy procedures.


• Ensures that all department employees receive appropriate manufacturer training.


• Conducts regular performance reviews for all technicians in accordance with dealership guidelines.


• Ensures that all repairs are assigned to technicians in an equal and fair manner.


• Provides technical support for technicians when necessary.


• Checks progress of each repair order throughout the day.


• Maintains high-quality service repairs and minimizes comebacks. Conducts periodic spot checks of completed jobs for thoroughness and quality.


• Road tests vehicles to quality-check work performed.


• Accounts for all documents; ensures that none are missing, and all are processed correctly.


• Monitors technicians' daily productivity reports.


• Monitors shop condition, including cleanliness, safety and the condition of shop equipment. Reports problems to the service manager or dealer.


• Ensures the proper care, storage and inventory of special tools.


• Keeps abreast of new equipment and tools available and recommends purchases.


• Dispatch work supplied by Service Advisor


• Keep Advisor informed on progress of work being performed


• Create Estimate of work needed for vehicle


• Lead technician huddle


• Attends managers meetings as requested.


• Maintains a safe work environment.


• Maintains professional appearance.


• Other tasks as assigned.


• Attends all service and parts meetings including daily advisor huddles. 

Physical Requirements:

• Moving about the dealership to complete auto service and repair


• Using hand and/or power tools and equipment consistent with industry standards


• Standing for 6 to 9 hours in a shift


• Normal color vision and depth perception. Visual acuity correctable to 20/20


• Ability to read information from printed sources and computer screens


• Frequent bending, stretching, lifting, reaching, and climbing


• Utilizing physical and manual dexterity, repetitive hand movements


• Lifting up to 70 lbs unassisted. Assisting other employees to lift heavier objects

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or the equivalent 


• Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information


• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record


• Maintains certifications or licenses required by state law


• Maintains certifications or training completion as required by vehicle manufacturer


• Completion of technical school or other form of instruction or training

Usual Hours of Work:

Monday - Friday  7:30 am - 5:30 pm
