Position Summary 

Provides behavioral support to students with special needs within a supervised school setting. Assists with creating a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students.

Essential Functions         

●      Conducts behavior assessments and evaluations to identify causes of student behavioral challenges.

●      Develops and implements behavior intervention plans to address disruptive or challenging behaviors.

●      Assists students individually and in small groups; models and teaches social skills, self-regulation techniques, and coping strategies.

●      Collaborates with teachers, specialists, and families to assess and monitor student progress and adjust support strategies as needed.

●      Participates in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings and provides guidance on behavior management strategies.

●      Provides behavior management training and workshops for staff and parents.

●      Maintains complete and accurate records of student behavior, progress, and interventions; prepares and presents reports to school teams and parents.

●      Builds and fosters effective working relationships with others. 

●      Enhances professional development and maintains knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.

●      Contributes to a team effort to achieve goals and deliver successful outcomes.

●      Performs other related duties, consistent with the scope, level, and minimum qualifications of the position, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

●      Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or closely related field.

●      One (1) year of progressive work experience in behavior management in a classroom or related environment.

●      BCBA certification recommended or enrolled in a BCBA program.

●      Experience with Inupiaq language, history and culture preferred.

●      A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered.

●      Valid driver’s license is required when operating a vehicle for work-related purposes.

●      Must successfully complete pre-employment requirements.



Requirements

Knowledge of:

●      Goals, objectives, functions, policies, procedures, and responsibilities of the North Slope Borough School District. 

●      Applicable laws, codes, regulations, and requirements.

●      Principles and practices of behavioral management and assessment, childhood development, and special education.

●      Records management practices. 

Skill in:

●      Reading, reviewing, preparing, and analyzing behavioral reports.

●      Analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

●      Training staff and families.

●      Making effective decisions in emergency situations.

●      Preparing comprehensive, concise, and accurate reports and plans; creating and presenting effective speeches and presentations.

●      Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

●      Office software and industry-related applications, including spreadsheets, databases, and industry-related applications in a Windows environment.

Ability to:

●      Maintain confidentiality.

●      Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, individually and in groups, and with students, teachers, and families.

●      Establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, including the public and co-workers and at all levels of the organization.

●      Evaluate, implement, and manage behavior plans.

●      Provide clear verbal and written instructions.

●      Adapt to varying conditions, analyze situations, and adopt appropriate courses of action.

●      Demonstrate professionalism at all times and demonstrate tact and sensitivity in tenuous situations.

●      Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

●      Work independently with minimal supervision, as well as cooperatively in group/team settings.

●      Interpret, apply and explain applicable laws, codes, regulations, and policies.

●      Make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.

●      Work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. 

Physical/Emotional Demands, Work Environment, Equipment Usage

Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a classroom environment and occasionally outdoors where incumbent may be exposed to varying temperature and weather conditions. Work involves frequent exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, and/or allergens. Work involves occasional exposure to high risk/potentially dangerous situations; excessive noise; infectious disease; and hostile or violent individuals. Work requires the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, or materials. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.  Travel may be required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.   

Physical/Mental Requirements:   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; stand; walk; move throughout the classroom and school; use hands to manipulate, touch, or grasp objects and materials; reach with hands and arms; communicate effectively; and lift/move up to 50 pounds.
