What will you be doing in this role?

The Blood Donor Phlebotomist I, functions under the supervision of senior licensed technical/clinical personnel. Responsibilities include assessing donor health histories and collecting whole blood and blood components from blood donors both in house and on mobiles. Additional duties include routine and specialized operational and support functions, such as receiving and stocking supplies; performing quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment, and assisting with set up and break down of mobile equipment and supplies. Other duties may include driving the mobile truck and the self-contained unit, loading and unloading mobile supplies and equipment, and stocking/restocking mobile supplies. Participates in special assignments or projects as specified. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the donor/patient population(s) being served. 

• Performs a variety of phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and special collection procedures in-house and at mobile drives, using proper technique in accordance with SOPs. 
• Conducts donor health history assessments using established criteria; obtains and evaluates donor vital signs, performs donor screening tests such as hemoglobin readings, and prepares donor arms for phlebotomy following SOPs. 
• Collects whole blood products from donors and monitors donor comfort and safety, responding appropriately to unexpected events and taking measures to prevent complications. 
• Supports division goals by converting whole blood donors to automation and assisting with donor rescheduling during collection procedures. 
• Utilizes the laboratory information system to enter, verify, and review donor and collection data for completeness and accuracy; registers donors and generates donor records. 
• Drives and maintains mobile collection vehicles; assists with setup and breakdown at mobile blood drive sites and manages mobile and in-house supplies and equipment.
• Collects, labels, transports, processes, prepares, and distributes donor blood products and specimens. 
• Operates and maintains laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, balances, and blood collection scales. 
• Performs routine operational support duties, including stocking supplies, cleaning work areas and equipment, and maintaining records. 
• Adheres to department policies, procedures, and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs). 
• Verifies the accuracy of donor and product information through proper labeling, documentation, and data entry while maintaining donor/patient confidentiality. 
• Identifies factors affecting product outcomes and takes appropriate corrective or preventive action. 

Requirements:

• High school diploma or its equivalent.

• Minimum of one (1) year experience as a blood donor phlebotomist, including familiarity with laboratory information systems, preferred. 

• Phlebotomy Certificate that meets the mandates of the laws and regulations of the State of California.

• California driver’s license and clean driving record, and able to drive mobile truck and self-contained unit.
