Fiberglass and Gelcoat Technician Job Description
The Fiberglass and Gelcoat Technician serves as a skilled specialist responsible for the repair, restoration, and finishing of fiberglass hulls, decks, and other marine components. This position requires hands-on technical expertise in fiberglass lamination, gelcoat application, surface preparation, and cosmetic restoration to return vessels to like-new condition. The technician works closely with the service team, service writers, and customers to assess damage, perform high-quality repairs, and ensure structural integrity and aesthetic excellence. A strong understanding of marine composites, materials, and safety practices is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Repair and Restoration:
Inspect vessels to identify fiberglass damage, delamination, osmosis, cracks, and gelcoat failures.
Perform structural fiberglass repairs including lay-up, laminating, and reinforcement using appropriate resins, matting, and core materials.
Repair, apply, and finish gelcoat surfaces to match original color, texture, and gloss.
Execute fairing, sanding, and blending techniques to achieve seamless cosmetic results.
Repair or replace marine components such as stringers, transoms, bulkheads, and deck fittings as needed.
Surface Preparation and Finishing:
Prepare surfaces through grinding, sanding, and chemical treatment prior to repair or refinishing.
Apply high-quality gelcoat, paint, and protective coatings using spray equipment, brushes, and rollers.
Perform color matching and custom finishing to meet customer expectations and industry standards.
Polish and detail completed surfaces to achieve a showroom-quality appearance.
Service Coordination:
Collaborate with Service Writers and the Service Manager to understand repair scopes and priorities.
Provide accurate time and material estimates for fiberglass and gelcoat work.
Document repair processes, materials used, and before/after photos for customer records and warranty purposes.
Communicate progress and any additional findings or recommendations to the service team and customers.
Ensure all work meets safety standards, manufacturer guidelines, and quality expectations.
Parts and Materials Management:
Identify and requisition necessary materials including fiberglass cloth, resins, gelcoat, fillers, and related supplies.
Verify compatibility and quality of materials with specific vessel makes and models.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while managing hazardous materials according to regulations.
Technical Expertise:
Stay current with advancements in marine composites, repair techniques, and products.
Troubleshoot complex fiberglass and gelcoat issues and develop effective repair solutions.
Mentor junior technicians and share best practices within the team.
Maintain detailed records of repairs for quality control and future reference.
Safety and Shop Operations:
Adhere to all safety protocols when working with resins, solvents, and power tools.
Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
Support overall shop cleanliness and organization.
Qualifications:
Proven experience as a Fiberglass/Gelcoat Technician in the marine, automotive, or composites industry required.
Strong working knowledge of fiberglass lamination, gelcoat application, osmosis repair, and marine refinishing techniques.
Ability to work with various resins (polyester, vinylester, epoxy), core materials, and finishing products.
Experience with spray equipment, color matching, and detailed surface preparation.
Valid driver’s license and ability to work in a shop and boatyard environment.
Ability to lift moderate to heavy loads (e.g., fiberglass panels, equipment) and stand for extended periods.
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Manufacturer-specific training or certifications (e.g., gelcoat, composites) preferred.
Basic computer skills for time tracking and documentation.

Work Location: Onsite. Possible travel to offsite locations or customer boats may be required.
