The Cable Technician is responsible for installing, splicing, and troubleshooting all fiber and copper cables for phone, data, and television. This position also performs all maintenance of fiber and copper for the outside plant.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: (include but are not limited to)
Locates fiber and copper cables
Provides maintenance of all cables pedestals, aerial terminals Xboxes, and splitters in outside plant
Troubleshoots fiber and copper trouble reports utilizing OTDR as applicable
Splices all fiber and copper cables for new orders, providing continuity to customer premise
Installs fiber splitters
Performs aerial splicing and installs aerial terminals in a bucket truck and/or off ladder
Assists with regrades for road moves
Operates all copper and fiber meters related to installation and repair of facilities with a basic understanding of OTDR, Visual Fault, power meter, cable locator, and digital ohm/volt meter
Works with Engineering to maintain cable and facility records
Assists other technical groups with troubles
Assists with special/major projects
Works with ERCC team in emergency situations
May identify and diagnose a variety of operational issues to ensure achievement of goals, and make recommendations to rectify such issues
May construct proper splice cases pressurized and non-pressurized, using all types and sizes of cables, including bonding, grounding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
May conduct necessary safety tests for toxic and explosive gas before entering manholes and continue tests while active work is in progress
May serve as departmental leader in the absence of the Cable Maintenance Supervisor
Works “on-call” rotation to respond and restore service for emergency calls; reports to duty on short notice, potentially afterhours/weekends as necessary, to repair damaged cables until service is restored
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Provides prompt, courteous service to all internal and external customers
Complies with company safety rules and regulations at all times and reports to supervisor any situation in which personal safety and the safety of other employees or the general public is in danger of being compromised
Maintains ability to work both independently and as part of a team, as appropriate, to ensure continuity of service
Maintains ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed
Displays ability to navigate PC web browsers/functions and MS Office Outlook
Maintains understanding of basic principles of electricity
Demonstrates strong organizational and communication skills
Maintains understanding of and ability to read and interpret outside plant schematics
Ability to carry 28’ extension ladder weighing 80 lbs
Ability to operate bucket trucks in a safe manner
May be required to maintain knowledge of operating characteristics of all cable systems in service

QUALIFICATIONS & PREREQUISITES
Cable Technician I:
Required:
1 year experience in outside plant cables
Valid driver’s license with clean record and reliable transportation
Must be able to obtain valid Class D chauffeur's license within 6 months of hire
Must be able to obtain TWIC card within 6 months of hire
Must be able to perceive difference in color codes/wires
Cable Technician II:
Required:
3 years’ experience in outside plant cables
Valid class D chauffeur's license with clean record and reliable transportation
Active TWIC card license
Must be able to perceive difference in color codes/wires
Cable Technician III:
Required:
5 years’ experience in outside plant cables
Valid class D chauffeur's license with clean record and reliable transportation
Active TWIC card license
Must be able to perceive difference in color codes/wires
