Carpenter - Commercial Construction - Windsor

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Carpenter I performs hands-on carpentry work under the direct supervision of a Foreman, Superintendent or more experienced Carpenter. This role builds foundational skills in reading plans, layout, and material handling while performing core carpentry tasks with growing accuracy and independence. The Carpenter supports self-perform work and general project needs, and occasionally supporting other trades’ work (as directed). 

Success requires a strong safety mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to follow direction while working both independently and as part of the team. By supporting Elder Construction projects, the Carpenter I contributes directly to the quality, safety, and flow of the overall project.

AREAS OF FOCUS  

1. Carpentry & Construction (80%) – Measures, cuts, and shapes building materials, builds temporary and permanent structures, and takes ownership of all assigned tasks with careand accuracy. Operates hand and power tools and small machinery, and maintains and plans for assigned tool and equipment needs. Reads basic  plans and learns structural plan interpretation, performs basic layout, and assists in calculating material needs.
2. Safety & Jobsite Compliance (20%) – Identifies and corrects potential hazards, follows pre-task planning, and actively participates in toolbox talks to keep the crew and jobsite safe.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

Carpentry & Construction

Performs core carpentry tasks with growing accuracy and independence, while supporting the overall flow of the project.

1. Reads basic plans and is learning structural plan interpretation including elevations, details, and sections to understand material and dimension requirements.
2. Performs basic layout, takes measurements, and calculates material needs, and is learning to produce an accurate material take-off.
3. Accurately measures, cuts, and shapes wood, metal, and other building materials, and builds temporary and permanent structures.
4. Operates hand and power tools and small machinery, maintains assigned tool inventory, and plans equipment and tool needs ahead of starting work.
5. Cleans and maintains the work area and all hand and power equipment, and loads and unloads materials up to 50 pounds.
6. Follows directions precisely, checks work for accuracy, corrects deficiencies, and observes experienced Carpenters to meet quality standards.
7. Takes ownership of all assigned tasks including cleanup, demo, and prep work with the same level of care as carpentry work, understanding this work supports the quality and flow of the overall project.

Safety & Jobsite Compliance

Helps maintain a safe jobsite by following established safety practices and speaking up when something doesn’t look right.

1. Identifies, reports, or corrects potential hazards associated with task assignments to maintain a safe work area.
2. Recognizes basic risks associated with carpentry tasks and uses the pre-task plan to ensure safe work practices.
3. Maintains attention to detail, checking tools and materials for safety before use.
4. Communicates with team members about potential risks and participates actively in toolbox talks.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Experience working as a Carpenter on commercial construction projects or related field.

2. Must have a good understanding of carpentry or related field.

3. Must have knowledge and safe use of basic hand/power tools.

4. Understand material and tool requirements of daily tasks.

5. Must be competent in installation of door hardware, drywall hanging and finish.

6. Ability to interpret plan, layout of framing and cabinets.

7. Must have a current and valid United States Driver’s License.

8. Must have competent written and verbal communication skills.

FIELD:

· While performing the duties of this job, the team member is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The team member is frequently required to climb or balance and stoop or kneel.

· The team member must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

FIELD:

· While performing the duties of this job, this position regularly works outdoors in various weather conditions. The team member frequently works near moving equipment, occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.

· The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
