THE OPPORTUNITY

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to reengineer the experience of criminal court in Brooklyn, New York by providing judges and attorneys meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and jail sentences. Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is a team of social service providers, court-based resource coordinators, and others who seek to improve the quality of justice. By providing meaningful pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing options, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to use an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a participant’s life and avoid the harmful effects of incarceration.  

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) Case Manager. Reporting to the Supervising Case Manager, the Case Manager's primary focus will be working with individuals who are mandated to engage in Alternative to Incarceration (ATI), Alternative to Detention (ATD), and Early Diversion programming. The Case Manager is responsible for conducting intakes, providing comprehensive case management services including crisis intervention when needed, making and monitoring referrals to external providers, and facilitating individual and group sessions. The Case Manager will stay in regular contact with participants, send court date reminders and submit compliance notices to the court.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide comprehensive, clinically informed case management services to both English and Spanish speaking participants that address issues such as substance use, mental health, trauma, domestic violence, housing, and educational/vocational needs;
  • Complete intakes and provide individual case management and counseling services (in English and Spanish) to a caseload of short- and long-term mandated participants;
  • Conduct outreach to collateral sources as needed to promote compliance and court monitoring;
  • Assist with data entry and ensure the accuracy of information in the electronic case management system. This includes entering case notes and assessments, community referrals, programming and case outcome data all in a comprehensive and timely manner;
  • Make appropriate referrals to community-based organizations for additional services;
  • Facilitate coordinated service delivery for on-site and community-based agencies/programming;
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation, as needed;
  • Manage and monitor participant compliance with service mandates;
  • Establish and maintain linkages with community partners who can provide age-appropriate interventions and services to court-involved individuals;
  • Provide accurate written and verbal reports to the court and other court stakeholders;
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment meetings;
  • Facilitate and develop a range of on-site psychoeducational groups;
  • Assist ATI management with the development and implementation of new programs, initiatives, and/or interventions;
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities, as needed;
  • Assist with data collection and management;
  • Assist with grant reporting requirements, as needed;
  • Provide clinical services as described above to program participants on a voluntary basis post-mandate;
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings;
  • Attend Brooklyn Justice Initiatives' community-based events after hours/on weekends, as needed; and;
  • Additional relevant tasks, as needed.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be bilingual (fluent) in both English and Spanish, and have a Bachelor’s degree OR 3-4 years of relevant experience. Experience in a court or criminal justice setting, or with justice-involved populations is preferred but not required. Prior experience working with youth and young adults, un-housed individuals, or those with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders is a plus. Candidate must be a skilled communicator, able to work in a multi-disciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and organizations both onsite and in the community. 

Position Type: Full time, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Position Location: Brooklyn, NY 

Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $52,000 - $65,400 and is commensurate with experience.
