JOB DESCRIPTION FOR CASHIER
Introduction:
The Society for St. Vincent de Paul, as founded by Fredrick Ozanam, is an international Catholic organization of lay persons whose purpose is to help the less fortunate through person-to-person contact with those in need of spiritual or material assistance. The Thrift Store and Furniture Annex serve as the structure to support those in our community by offering low cost clothing and other household items.
The incumbent of this job description reports directly to the Lead Worker of the Cashiering Department. Any questions regarding this job description will be referred to the Store Manager or Assistant Manager for clarification.

Summary:
Primary Role:
A cashier’s primary role is to assist customers in the in-store check-out process. Main cashiering duties include ringing up sales, collecting payment and giving back appropriate change. Cashiers are also responsible for counting the contents of cash in the register drawer prior to and at the end of each shift. Additionally, they assist customers by answering questions about products and their location in the store.
Cross-Training:
Cashiers will be cross-trained in other store functions, general sorting, clothing sorting, receiving and other departments as needed, to provide operational support and maintain flexibility in staffing.
Assisting in Other Store Areas:
Assisting in other areas of the store as directed by management based on operational needs.
Experience:
Basic sales skills are preferred but not required.
Position Type and Pay:
This is an hourly position at currently $17.13 per hour. Employees are required to have direct deposit either via bank account or in the form of a reloadable debit card.
Schedule and Availability:
This position requires shift work; mornings, afternoon, evenings and Saturdays & Sundays.
Training:
St. Vincent de Paul will provide in-depth training for new cashiers on the point of sale system and its navigation, phone etiquette and how to correctly process paperwork. The incumbent will also learn store policies and procedures during the probationary period.

Probationary Period:
New employees will be required to serve a 90-day probationary period, during this time employees are not eligible for holiday pay. At the end of the 90-day probationary period employees will receive holiday pay when their schedule work day falls on a paid holiday.
Leave and Benefits:.
Dental and vision insurance is offered to employees who work an average of 31.5 hours per week (considered full-time), at a cost, once they have been employed 90 days. Supplemental insurance (AFLAC and Colonial) is also offered at this 90-day point. Paid time off (PTO) for both full-time and part-time employees will start to accrue after 90-days of continuous service and is earned at a rate based on length of service. Sick leave begins to accrue at time of hire. The accrual rate is one (1) hour for every 40 hours worked and sick leave may not be used until the employee has 90 days of continuous service.
