Position Summary


The Marine Electrician installs, maintains, repairs, and tests shipboard electrical systems and components aboard U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Items, MIL-STDs, NFPA 70E, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910/1915 requirements. This position supports the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Production Support IDIQ program by performing electrical work safely and efficiently within controlled industrial and confined-space environments.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities



  • Install, maintain, and repair lighting, power, control, and communication circuits aboard naval vessels.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and Technical Work Documents (TWDs) to ensure compliance with NAVSEA S9300-AW-EDG-010 (Electrical Plant Installation Standard Methods).

  • Perform continuity, insulation-resistance, and functional testing using appropriate electrical test equipment (volt/amp/ohm meters, meggers, power analyzers).

  • Troubleshoot faults in motors, controllers, switchboards, and distribution panels; isolate and correct wiring and component issues.

  • Install and terminate cables, conduits, fittings, breakers, fuses, switches, and receptacles to meet MIL-STD-1310 (Bonding and Grounding) requirements.

  • Conduct Initial Voltage Verification and comply with Lockout/Tagout (HEC/LOTP) procedures prior to energizing or de-energizing circuits.

  • Maintain compliance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-74 (Occupational Safety and Health Requirements) and site-specific safety instructions.

  • Coordinate work with other trades, ensuring proper sequencing and safe integration of multi-trade operations.

  • Document inspections, tests, repairs, and material usage on applicable job logs and QA forms.

  • Participate in daily pre-job briefs, toolbox talks, and post-job reviews with AMP and NNSY Supervisors.


Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Working knowledge of electrical theory, including AC/DC circuits, Ohm's Law, and power calculations.

  • Proficient in the use of test meters, analyzers, and other diagnostic tools.

  • Ability to interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and NAVSEA drawings.

  • Familiarity with shipboard electrical distribution and control systems.

  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items, MIL-STDs, and NFPA 70E requirements for safe electrical work.

  • Ability to perform work safely in confined/enclosed spaces and at elevated heights with fall-protection systems.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and documentation skills.

  • Effective communication with supervisors and team members to ensure coordination and compliance.


Training and Certification Requirements


Marine Electrician personnel must complete and maintain the following prior to assignment:



  • NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Training

  • Lockout/Tagout (HEC/LOTP) Training

  • Confined/Enclosed Space Entry

  • Respiratory Protection

  • Fall Protection

  • Fire Watch / Tank Watch

  • Shipyard Mandatory Annual Training

  • First Aid / CPR certification


Security and Access Requirements



  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass all background, drug, and security checks.

  • Must possess or obtain a Secret Clearance.


Education and Experience



  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship, military training, or technical trade program.

  • Minimum four (4) years verifiable industrial or shipyard electrical experience, including at least two (2) years aboard U.S. Navy ships or submarines.

  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and shipyard electrical safety procedures.


Physical Requirements



  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. climb ladders and scaffolding, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces.

  • Normal color vision to discern color-coded wiring.

  • Must wear all required PPE (hard hat, safety shoes, respirator, gloves, FR clothing, eye/ear protection, and fall protection gear).

  • Must maintain fitness for duty and respirator qualification.
