Qualifications:
Youth Peer Support Specialists must have direct lived experience with mental health challenges as a youth
Be a Certified Youth Peer Support Specialist
As required by MDHHS, complete a minimum of 32 continuing education hours of approved training, workshops, and/or conferences during the two-year period prior to renewal of certification.
Be a young adult, ages 18 through 28, with lived experience with mental health challenges as a youth and who received mental health support as a youth or young adult. Experience receiving services in a variety of systems (such as child welfare, education, the justice system, vocation, housing, etc.) as a youth or young adult is preferred
Primary diagnosis of a mental health condition
Have a strong personal knowledge of what it is like to have first-hand lived experience with a mental health condition that has caused a substantial life disruption
Has been a recipient of mental health treatment and/or services for at least one year, with a substantial life disruption due to their mental health condition
Have personal experience in navigating complex mental health treatment services
Job Duties:
Direct services may include outreach and engagement, linkage to community supports, transportation, in-home services, group facilitation and advocacy. Responsible for representing Easterseals, developing and maintaining community partnerships and marketing substance use services in the community through the process of formal presentations and informal check-ins with community partners. Promotes and participates in activities that enhance consumer recovery such as community inclusion activities, advocacy and anti-stigma, education opportunities, etc. Attends team meetings and receives assignments from supervisor, team leader or designee. Supports team and staff in identifying program environments that are conducive to recovery; lending their unique insight into mental illness or dual diagnosis and what makes recovery possible. Advocates client decision-making and assists consumers in determining goals and objectives that will help reach recovery. May assist consumers in creating relapse prevention strategies.
