Job Overview
A leading healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Chief Cytotechnologist Cytology to oversee the clinical, technical, quality, and administrative operations of its Cytology department.
This is a hands-on leadership position that combines daily cytology screening with staff supervision, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, procedure development, and departmental operations. The Chief Cytotechnologist will work closely with pathologists, laboratory leadership, imaging departments, and procedural teams to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic services.
The ideal candidate will have lead or supervisory-level cytology experience, strong knowledge of CAP and New York State Department of Health standards, and extensive experience screening gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine-needle aspiration specimens.
Responsibilities
Lead and supervise the daily clinical and operational activities of the Cytology department
Screen gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens accurately and within established turnaround times
Evaluate fine-needle aspiration specimens and assist with aspiration procedures
Support procedures originating from ambulatory surgery, breast imaging, endoscopy, radiology, and off-site imaging locations
Review and sign out cases with pathologists according to the established schedule
Assist with specimen preparation, staining, and coverslipping as needed
Verify slide labels, patient information, specimen counts, clinical information, and gross descriptions against requisitions
Maintain aspiration procedure trays, equipment, solutions, and required supplies
Write, revise, and maintain departmental standard operating procedures
Maintain all records required by CAP, the New York State Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies
Complete monthly and annual reviews of applicable regulatory and accreditation standards
Prepare and submit quality-control and quality-assurance reports
Monitor departmental performance and implement corrective actions when necessary
Maintain continuing-education records for Cytology staff
Develop and document competency assessments for Cytotechnologists
Assist with employee performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions
Interview and evaluate Cytology candidates for employment
Meet regularly with the Laboratory Director and laboratory administration
Order supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels
Ensure laboratory equipment is cleaned, maintained, and operating properly
Promote accurate documentation, patient safety, and regulatory compliance
Participate in department projects and additional laboratory activities as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related scientific field
Graduation from an accredited or certified School of Cytology, or qualifying ASCP certification
Minimum of three years of experience screening:
Gynecologic specimens
Non-gynecologic specimens
Fine-needle aspiration specimens
Previous lead, senior, charge, or supervisory-level Cytology experience
Current New York State Cytotechnologist license upon hire
Current ThinPrep certification upon hire
ASCP certification if the candidate has not completed a certified Cytology school program
Strong knowledge of the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology
Knowledge of CAP and New York State Department of Health laboratory standards
Experience with Cytology quality control, quality assurance, and regulatory documentation
Strong attention to detail, organization, adaptability, and time-management skills
Ability to respond quickly to changing departmental and procedural needs
Proficiency with laboratory information systems, computers, and laboratory equipment
Preferred
ASCP Cytotechnologist certification
Previous experience managing a hospital-based Cytology department
Experience writing and implementing laboratory policies and procedures
Experience overseeing employee competencies, performance reviews, and continuing education
Experience supporting rapid on-site evaluation or image-guided aspiration procedures
Experience preparing for CAP or state laboratory inspections
