About the Role

 

The Grand Rapids Downtown Market is home to the Christkindl Markt, one of the Midwest's premier holiday traditions, welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests each season.



We are seeking an organized, professional, and hospitality-minded Bar Supervisor to oversee daily bar operations, lead seasonal staff, and ensure bars are stocked, safe, clean, and ready to deliver exceptional guest experiences.



Working closely with the Director of Food & Beverage and Christkindl Markt team, you'll supervise bartenders, bar pourers, and bar backs while overseeing opening, service, inventory, and closing procedures.

Essential Responsibilities


  • Supervise, support, coach, and direct bartenders, bar pourers, and bar backs throughout each shift.

  • Coordinate daily staffing assignments and communicate operational needs using radios and other tools.

  • Open multiple bar locations, distribute POS systems and radios, and ensure equipment is operational.

  • Monitor bar operations, walk the market, anticipate needs, resolve issues, and support staff during service.

  • Maintain inventory, monitor product levels, and ensure bars are stocked and prepared for guest demand.

  • Ensure proper product storage, temperature control, FIFO rotation, inventory records, and restocking.

  • Maintain clean, organized bar and storage areas and follow food safety, sanitation, and beverage-handling standards.

  • Support bartenders and assist with bar preparation and operations as needed.

  • Complete closing procedures, including collecting POS systems and radios, securing equipment, storing temperature-sensitive products, completing inventory, restocking, and locking all bars.

  • Communicate professionally with guests, staff, leadership, and other event departments.

  • Follow all safety, service, and operational standards and assist with additional event duties as needed.




Qualifications & Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.

  • At least two years of customer service or related experience, preferably in hospitality.

  • At least two years of supervisory or leadership experience.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Previous POS experience required; Square experience preferred.

  • Comfortable using radios and technology to coordinate operations.

  • Knowledge of inventory management, FIFO practices, food safety, sanitation, and proper product storage.

  • Ability to lead a seasonal team, manage competing priorities, and remain calm in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated commitment to hospitality, teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and guest satisfaction.

  • Ability to work outdoors in winter conditions and adapt to changing operational needs.




Physical Requirements

 

This position requires the ability to:


  • Stand and walk throughout the entirety of a shift and move safely between indoor and outdoor areas.

  • Regularly lift or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.

  • Bend, reach, and use hands to safely open, stock, operate, maintain, and close multiple bars.

  • Use an in-ear radio communication device throughout shifts, with or without accommodations.

  • Work in cold temperatures, changing environments, and occasional inclement winter weather.

  • Wear required uniforms and protective clothing or equipment.




Schedule & Work Environment

 

This is a part-time, temporary seasonal position supporting the Christkindl Markt during the holiday season.



The position primarily operates outdoors, with occasional work in indoor market areas, coolers, and storage spaces. Conditions may include cold weather, temperature changes, dust, dirt, grease, pollen, mold, cleaning products, noise, and busy, crowded event environments.



Team members are expected to:


  • Arrive and depart on time, accurately record hours, and use work time efficiently.

  • Demonstrate strong time management, prioritization, and flexibility.

  • Respond to changing staffing, guest, and operational needs.

  • Wear provided uniform components, including a hat, coat, identification, and other required items.
