Civil Engineer I

Job Description - Civil Engineer I

Design Better. Build Something Stronger. Deliver Faster.

About CEG

Cedarville Engineering Group (CEG) delivers design-build civil infrastructure and environmental remediation projects for federal agencies, including work on active military installations. Our projects directly support national defense, environmental restoration, and resilient infrastructure. We are a 50-person firm with offices in Pottstown, PA and Tampa, FL.

The Role

We are looking for a Civil Engineer I who is ready to get their hands dirty from day one. This is not a seat-warming position — you will be designing real projects, solving real problems, and seeing your work show up in the field. You'll work alongside experienced engineers while owning real deliverables that carry your name.

You will work across:

  • Grading, drainage, and erosion & sediment control design

  • Site layout and civil plan development

  • Construction document preparation and permit support

  • Field observation and construction-phase coordination

What This Role Really Is

You are an engineer who wants to build, not just draft.

You take ownership of your task list — not just the easy pieces, but the hard ones too. You ask questions when you're stuck, push forward when you're not, and take pride in delivering work that holds up in the field. When a plan goes out the door with your initials on it, you've already reviewed it like someone else's career depends on it — because yours does.

The CEG Standard

At CEG, we have one baseline expectation that applies to every role: put your name on your work and mean it. We don't want people who hand things off and move on. We want people who look back at what they delivered and are proud of it. If you're the kind of person who holds yourself to a higher standard than anyone else would hold you to — you'll fit here.

CEG operates on a simple standard we call Better-Stronger-Faster. Better means every deliverable is an improvement on what came before — you don't repeat mistakes and you don't settle for good enough. Stronger means we build capability in everything we do — in our people, our processes, and the projects we leave behind. Faster means we move with urgency — clients trust us because we respond, act, and deliver without making them wait. If that's how you approach your work, you'll thrive here.

Better-Stronger-Faster — What That Means in This Role

  • Better – Your designs are more accurate, more buildable, and more thorough than what was there before.

  • Stronger – Every project you touch leaves you more capable than the last one did.

  • Faster – You hit deadlines without sacrificing quality — clients never have to chase you for a deliverable.

Key Responsibilities: What You'll Do

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

Design & Engineering

  • Prepare grading plans, drainage designs, and erosion & sediment control plans

  • Develop detailed site layouts and construction drawings using AutoCAD / Civil 3D

  • Perform engineering calculations and assist in preparing technical reports

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver compliant, constructible designs

  • Self-check every deliverable before it leaves your desk — your initials mean it's right, not just done

Project Support

  • Assist with permit applications and agency coordination

  • Support construction-phase services including site visits, RFI responses, and submittal reviews

  • Maintain organized project documentation and track deliverable schedules

  • Communicate clearly with project managers, clients, and contractors — no one is left wondering where things stand

Growth & Collaboration

  • Work alongside senior engineers and actively seek mentorship

  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality checks

  • Contribute ideas — we want your perspective, not just your output

  • Work toward PE licensure with full firm support

Qualifications: What You Bring

Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program (recent graduates encouraged to apply).

  • 0–3 years of civil engineering experience (internship or co-op experience counts)

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Civil 3D experience a strong plus

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

Certifications

  • EIT certification required (or actively pursuing)

Preferred

  • Exposure to stormwater, grading, or site design projects

  • Familiarity with State, Local, and Federal permitting is a plus, but not required.

  • Exposure to federal (USACE, NAVFAC) or municipal design standards

Capabilities

  • You sign your work because you're confident it's right — not just done

  • You're always looking for a better way to approach the problem

  • You move with urgency — deadlines are commitments, not suggestions

  • You take pride in finished work; mediocre output isn't acceptable to you

  • You grow from every project and bring that growth to the next one

What Matters Here – Our Core Values

  • Responsive – You communicate clearly and act quickly

  • Driven – You take ownership of outcomes

  • Problem-Solver – You fix gaps, not just document them

  • Growth Mindset – You stay current and push the work forward

  • Respect – We hold the line and treat people right

If you want a firm that assigns tasks and leaves you alone, this isn't it.

If you want to design better, build something stronger, and deliver faster — you'll fit right in.

Work Environment

  • Office-based in Pottstown, PA with regular field visits to project sites

  • Collaborative environment with direct access to senior engineers

  • Work supports federal, municipal, and private sector clients, including projects on active military installations

  • Office work occurs in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment; field work may include exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, asphalt, and concrete

  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and must be worn on site

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds at times (e.g., field equipment and plan sets)

  • Must be physically capable of moving about on construction sites, including walking, standing, and bending over rough terrain

  • Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from project sites

  • Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

Travel Required

To and from project sites; up to approximately 25%. Occasional overnight travel to out-of-area project sites may be required.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background screening

Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Work on federal projects and active military installations requires the ability to pass a background check and obtain installation access credentials as required by the client.

Why This Role Matters

Your work isn't background support — it's the reason projects get built.

You ensure:

  • Communities get better infrastructure when engineers take their work personally

  • Projects are designed to last — not just to pass review

  • CEG remains a firm that delivers Better-Stronger-Faster on every engagement

Good engineering changes the built environment. Design better. Build something stronger. Deliver faster.

Top 10 Reasons to Join the CEG Team
