Department: Over the Road Trucking

Shift:    Sunday/Monday - Wednesday/Thursday 1830 - 0500

Reports to: Assistant Traffic Manager and Traffic Manager

 

Job Summary:

As a Class A CDL Local Driver, you will be responsible for the safe timely delivery and pickup of goods at various locations across the state. You will be tasked with driving and maintaining trucks that will be assigned to you, as well as working closely with our team of dispatchers who are planning routes and tracking deliveries. The ideal Class A CDL Local Driver adheres to American Furniture Warehouse’s quality expectations and standards and is committed to under promising and over delivering to our customers. Duties/Responsibilities:

 

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for delivering our products in a safe, timely and accurate manner, along with meeting and controlling operational goals and timelines. 
  • Operate trucks requiring an appropriate CDL license (e.g., performing basic functions like driving forwards, driving backwards, or maneuvering in tight spaces, etc.) 
  • Transport and deliver goods in accordance with the schedule as determined by the dispatcher/Traffic Manager. 
  • Operate truck and trailer units in a safe manner. Report any vehicle problems and defects to the Garage department.
  • Comply with all state, local and national Department of Transportation standards and regulations while maintaining a good driving record. 
  • Commitment to AFW's safety policies and procedures and the ability to promote awareness.
  • Abide by all FMCSA and DOT laws, rules, and regulations. 
  • All training provided by AFW.
  • Complies with internal process and procedures as well as all local and federally regulated requirements including DOT and OSHA
  • Verifying log information and entering all data into application (Omnitracs) to include hours of service. 

Qualifications

  • Must have a CDL with at least one year of recent OTR experience with similar equipment. 
  • No major FMCSA violations.
  • Clean MVR with no at-fault D.O.T reportable accidents within the last three years.
  • Must be able to maintain CDL.  

Supervision Given and Received:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This position is supervised directly by the Assistant Traffic Manager and Traffic Manager.  

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Able to perform vehicle pre-trips up to FMCSA standards.
  • Ability to operate Electronic Log System.
  • Must be aware that operations occur on asphalt, concrete and gravel surfaces in a hostile environment often contaminated with material subject to embedding in tires.
  • Must function and interact on a routine basis with the AFW management and Dispatch team.
  • Communicate using a cellular telephone with dispatch and AFW personnel.
  • Ability to efficiently work independently of direct supervision.
  • Have a strong work ethic.
  • Excellent organizational skill and the ability to demonstrate attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks when appropriate.
  • Ability to be trained on the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Certificates and Licenses: 

Class A CDL without restrictions.

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED is preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience accepted in lieu of diploma.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Requires the ability to maneuver in confined and at times congested areas. 
  • Requires constant use of arms, hands, fingers, eyes, legs, and back. 
  • Able to work in various weather conditions. The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Able to work in an environment with considerable exterior/interior noise.
  • Able to climb in and out of tractor and trailer numerous times daily.
