Position Summary

The Clinic Nurse is a key member of the interdisciplinary team responsible for coordination of care for the comprehensive weight management patient.  The Clinic Nurse is to provide professional nursing care in a clinical setting.  The process includes assessment of patient and family, education and continuity of care.  The Clinic Nurse is responsible for the documenting all related activities in accordance with clinical protocol requirements and OSUMC Policy and Procedure.  Nursing care is delivered in a manner that is cost effective without compromising patient care. The Clinic Nurse designs, implements and evaluates systems to improve the quality of nursing care for the patient.

Duties and Responsibilities 

95% of the time:  Serves as a Clinic Nurse by providing and documenting patient care in accordance with applicable standards of practice.

  • Applies the nursing process to all areas of practice
  • Provides care according to patient needs; performs specialized nursing care as outlined in department/unit specific competency profiles
  • Provides nursing care in a multi-disciplinary care setting which demonstrates sound professional judgment, clinical competence, appropriate job knowledge, teaching skills and a working sense of resource management. All of these activities occur in a “Customer First” service environment.
  • Participates in unit performance improvement initiatives.
  • Triages patient phone calls, collects medication histories, and provides care as needed.
  • Responsible for reviewing and reporting lab and test results
  • Teaches patients and/or families appropriate health information..
  • Provides nursing care to assigned patients; formulates, implements and evaluates nursing care based on individual needs.
  • Records observations of medical needs. Completely and accurately documents care and care processes in paper and electronic medical records.
  • Provides patient care as delegated by physicians, APP’s, including medications, treatments, and procedures.
  • Participates in the accumulation of data to be utilized in Clinical Research projects.
  • Maintains a safe and secure environment
  • Assumes coordinating role in emergency situations
  • Keeps abreast of current developments/ technologies in field of practice
  • Incorporates evidence based practice in approaches to problem-solving and decision-making
  • Demonstrates a willingness to share professional/technical expertise and advice with others
  • Adheres to regulatory compliance standards (JCAHO, ODH, etc.)
  • Attends and/or presents in-service and continuing education programs
  • Represents professional nursing on committees
  • May assume preceptor responsibility
  • Performs miscellaneous duties to support the mission of  OSUWMC
  • Communicates pertinent patient information to other members of the care team
  • Performs related work as required.

5% of the time:

  • Supervises, evaluates, and directly observes implementation of nursing care by support personnel in the clinical setting.

  • Performs tasks in a cost effective manner while maintaining quality
  • Creatively identifies and uses resources (i.e. consults with Advanced Practice Nurses, etc.)
  • Contributes to performance improvement of the hospital, the unit and the patient care team

Organizational Expectations 

The Clinic Nurse practices within the OSUWMC policies and procedures and Division of Nursing standards of practice. He/she adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements and patient focused care model as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive effective interaction with staff and formulating and meeting developmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:         Graduate of an accredited school of registered nursing. Current Ohio license or interim permit. Previous experience in a relevant care setting preferred.            

On going:         Maintains and seeks new knowledge related to evidence based practice, patient care issues, quality improvement, cost reduction, current policies, procedures, and protocols. Maintains current Ohio RN license. Meets mandatory educational and health requirements. Demonstrates computer skills required to meet job functions.

Patient Population Served   

Knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatments necessary to meet the age specific needs of the patient population served.
