Job Description - Clinical Intern

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY 

Cornerstone is a $5M agency with approximately 90 employees.  Our organization serves individuals impacted by domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking and general crimes with office locations in Bloomington, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn Center. 

Cornerstone has developed one of the most comprehensive service continuums for victims of violence in Minnesota. Our services are designed to move individuals and families from crisis to safety, stabilization and security. Last year approximately 4,000 individuals accessed Cornerstone programming. In addition, through Cornerstone’s statewide Day One Crisis and Crime Victim Support lines, we provided services to over 20,000 persons via phone, text and chat. POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

This is a clinical internship aimed at providing second year or advanced standing social work interns with a well-rounded clinical experience in providing individual and group therapy within an outpatient setting.  Clinical interns will carry their own case load, and will conduct diagnostic assessments, develop treatment plans, and provide care coordination for adults, children, and families impacted by interpersonal violence; domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Interns will gain strong assessment and treatment skills and will increase their knowledge base around working with varying cultural communities. This position will work out of Cornerstone’s office location in Bloomington but may involve travel to Cornerstone offices located in Brooklyn Center, and Minneapolis. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Interns must be pursuing a Master's degree in Social Work, and must be either in advanced standing or in the second year of their master's program. Interns must have a desire to gain education working with survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, human trafficking and general crime and have experience working with diverse populations. Interns must have a basic knowledge of resources and how to access them, and a desire to increase this knowledge over the course of their internship. Interns must have the ability to work independently and to make decisions under pressure. In addition, any training or experience in evidence-based practice model is desirable. TIME REQUIREMENTS: 

  • 6-20 hours a week, or 200-300 in-person hours over the course of the 9-month internship. This internship is not designed for one semester, as the services we provide to participants is founded on stability in the therapeutic relationship 

  • Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Friday – between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. This internship is designed for students receiving college credit and is not paid.  

  • Time off: Please let your supervisor know if you need time off (vacation, sick, etc.) 

  • This internship is based out of the Bloomington office. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • The desire to clinically work with children, youth, families, and adults who have been involved in situations of physical, emotional, sexual abuse and human trafficking 

  • Good communication, listening, empathy and advocacy skills 

  • Flexibility, initiative, work cooperatively with others 

  • Ability to relate to people of different economic, cultural, racial, and social backgrounds 

  • Emotional maturity to work with different economic, cultural, racial, and social backgrounds 

  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries 

  • Possess car, license, and insurance 

  • Pass Criminal Background Check 

INTERNSHIP ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES 

Direct Service: 

  • Maintain compliance with community practice standards; complete diagnostic assessments, closing summaries, progress notes, and clinical treatment plans as required and under the supervision of a licensed independent clinical social worker. 

  • Provide therapeutic services to clients across the lifespan from children to adults (includes individual and family therapy and/or group services) 

  • Conduct crisis and/or mental health screening to determine service needs 

  • Complete safety plan with clients as needed 

  • Facilitate support group and/or therapeutic groups as needed 

  • Provide care coordination for clients and their families that includes working with external agencies to support client and provide referrals to resources 

  • Maintain effective and timely communication and documentation regarding services and client status 

  • Develop professional relationships and maintain a practical understanding of available community resources 

  • Knowledge and/or experience with electronic health record 

  • Work in compliance with all Cornerstone policies and procedures 

  • Record accurate, complete, confidential information in case notes and data base 

  • Maintain confidentiality of records in accordance with current HIPAA standards 

  • Perform other responsibilities requested or approved by supervisor 

Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Must be available to work a minimum of 1 evening a week 

  • Participate in program meetings, individual and group supervision 

  • Must complete the required sexual violence/domestic violence training. This is a 50 hour training that will occur within the first 2 months of the internship and may include one full week of day-long Monday-Friday training. Supervisors will work with professors to excuse class as needed 

  • Familiarity with and ensures adherence to NASW Code of Ethics, HIPAA standards, as well as state professional and ethical standards for mental health 

  • Must complete clinical documentation and database within a timely manner 

  • Attend all-staff meetings and trainings and appropriate and assigned  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities and those who may be Deaf/Hard of Hearing, to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the intern is regularly required to talk or hear. The intern is frequently required to use manual dexterity for use of objects, tools or controls as well as visual acuity. The intern is required to stand, walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The intern must lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The intern should always request assistance if any object needs to be lifted, and the intern feels that their capabilities are such that the specific item to be lifted is beyond the employee's abilities. No intern should attempt to lift more than what is comfortable for them. If such a situation should arise the intern should notify their supervisor to find help with lifting any item regardless of weight if the object to be lifted is awkward or difficult to lift in any way.
