How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

This position offers a unique opportunity to grow with the Carilion Clinic Kidney Transplant Program, which is opening 2026. The psychologist's primary responsibility will include psychological evaluation and assessment for potential recipients of renal transplant.
  • ​​​Primary responsibilities for this position include:

    • Conducts comprehensive psychological evaluations for renal transplant candidates for readiness, psychosocial risk factors, and suitability for transplantation.
    • Adheres to standards of Psychological Assessment of Candidates for Transplantation (PACT).
    • Ensures documentation meets CMS/UNOS transplant psychosocial requirements.
    • Possesses and maintains expert knowledge for medically based psychological testing and assessment protocols and procedures.
    • Preferred knowledge of transplant evaluations and process, or willingness/ability to learn this specialty.
    • Ability to present patient-centered results to patients and families. 
    • Attends transplant program, planning, and case review meetings.
     

    Additional responsibilities include:

    • Coordinates and provides individualized age-appropriate care for patients.
    • Interprets and reports results of psychological assessments in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Assesses patients need for services; treats accordingly within the parameters of the master treatment plan for each patient and documents interventions; and develops/maintains therapeutic relationships with individuals.
    • Serves as member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, participating in the coordination of the patient’s treatment with attending physicians, care team members, referral sources, family, and /or others.
    • Collaborates with other team members and supports the process of team building within the department and throughout the organization.
    • Enhances professional growth by participating in educational activities to ensure ongoing competence in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
    • Assists with special projects.
    • Provides education and training for other professional disciplines, hospital staff, and/or community groups/individuals.

What We Require:

Education: Ph.D. in Psychology from an APA accredited graduate school required.

Experience: Two years clinical experience which may include the year of internship required. The second year must be post-graduate and include supervision by a licensed Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist.
 

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Licensed by Virginia by the Board of Medicine as a clinical psychologist or by the Board of Psychology as a Psychologist (Clinical), or in West Virginia by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists required. Must have de-escalation training successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained annually going forward when working in the inpatient environment.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with physicians and other health care providers. Must have a commitment to continuing education.
