Job Description - CNC Machinist Team Lead

Position Overview


The CNC Machinist Team Lead is a working lead position, with approximately 80% of the role focused on hands-on machining, responsible for setting up and operating CNC and manual machining equipment to produce precision components to exact specifications and close tolerances. This position also provides day-to-day leadership to the machining team by assigning and prioritizing work, supporting production schedules, training and mentoring employees, participating in the hiring process, and partnering with management and Human Resources on employee-related matters as needed.


 

Responsibilities


  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machining equipment, including Mazak machines, lathes, boring mills, and small mills, to perform precision boring, milling, drilling, tapping, turning, threading, and facing operations.




  • Review blueprints, job orders, process sheets, and specifications to determine machining requirements, sequence of operations, tooling, feeds, speeds, and workpiece setup.

  • Position and secure workpieces, select and install appropriate tooling, establish machine settings, and make adjustments necessary to maintain quality and production requirements.

  • Inspect completed work using precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and dial indicators, to ensure components meet dimensions and close tolerances.

  • Lay out machining locations, sharpen and maintain tooling, and deburr finished parts as required.

  • Assign, prioritize, and delegate daily work to team members to support production schedules and departmental needs.

  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and troubleshooting support related to machine setups, tooling, machining methods, blueprint interpretation, and quality concerns.

  • Train, mentor, and support new and existing employees to promote consistent machining practices, quality standards, productivity, and safe work practices.

  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of machining employees and work with management and Human Resources on employee-related matters as needed.

  • Lead by example by promoting teamwork, communication, accountability, safety, quality, and an organized and clean work environment.


Qualifications 



  • 3–5 years of experience as a skilled CNC machinist, journey-level machinist, or equivalent machining experience.

  • Previous experience leading, training, or mentoring employees preferred.

  • CNC programming experience with Mazatrol and/or Fanuc preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of machining practices, tooling, machine setup, feeds, speeds, and cutting techniques.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings, schematics, job procedures, and machining specifications.

  • Strong shop math skills, including an understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment and consistently work to close tolerances.

  • Ability to independently set up and complete machining work with minimal supervision.

  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, organizational, and multitasking skills.

  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to producing accurate, quality work.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide clear direction and instruction to others.

  • Team-oriented with the ability to work effectively with employees across different skill and experience levels.

  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and overhead crane.

  • Ability to safely operate required power tools, hand tools, and measuring equipment.

  • Regular attendance and punctuality are required.

  • Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends based on production needs.
