General Contractor in Newport News, VA is seeking a Commercial Carpenter who is committed to performing and maintaining the quality work standards established by Hampton Roads Contracting, Inc.

Job Overview:


Reporting to the General Foreman, the Commercial Carpenter is responsible for performing various construction duties as required for Hampton Roads Contracting, Inc. The Commercial Carpenter performs manual labor and may build, erect, install, and repair structures and other fixtures. This role performs general construction duties, including finish and rough carpentry, demolition, installation, and remodeling to support safe and efficient project completion.


 


Assignments may change based on project needs, and employees may be required to perform duties outside their primary trade to support overall project completion.



Description and Responsibilities:


Essential functions include but are not limited to:



  • Read and interpret engineered drawings, sketches, and specifications.

  • Perform finish and trim carpentry, including installation of baseboards, crown molding, chair rails, wainscoting, and door/window casing.

  • Measure, mark, cut, and assemble materials to precise layout and dimensions.

  • Install and adjust interior/exterior doors, windows, ceiling tile, frames, hinges, and hardware.

  • Install appliances, cabinetry, countertops, and built-ins to specifications.

  • Perform remodeling and renovation work, including demolition, framing, and refurbishment.

  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding as required for job tasks.

  • Use various hand and power tools to securely build assigned projects.

  • Safely operate aerial lifts, including boom lifts and scissor lifts, and perform work at elevated heights.

  • Inspect equipment/machinery for safe day-to-day operation and for general maintenance needs.

  • Clean, maintain, and secure all equipment as directed by management and company policies and procedures.

  • Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Follow all safety protocols, job site regulations, and quality standards.

  • Perform other miscellaneous general construction duties as needed for project completion, including other manual labor.


 


Job Requirements and Qualifications:



  • Previous construction carpentry experience required.

  • Ability to read and comprehend engineered sketches and drawings.

  • Enthusiastic, professional, and positive attitude.

  • Strong work ethic.

  • Ability to work long hours.

  • Ability to pass a background check.

  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to operate company vehicles preferred.



Physical Requirements



  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours per day).

  • Ability to perform various functional range of motion tasks.

  • Ability to lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally more with assistance.

  • Ability to push and pull materials and tools.

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions, including but not limited to gripping, reaching, and using hand and power tools.

  • Ability to work on and navigate uneven surfaces and from heights.

  • Ability to maintain balance and coordination in active construction environments.

  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to:

    • Extreme heat and cold

    • Rain, wind, and humidity

    • Dusty or noisy conditions



  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and task specific requirements.



Work Environment



  • Work is performed on active construction sites, typically in a shipyard environment.

  • Exposure to moving machinery, loud noise, and construction-related hazards.

  • Work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.

  • Exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.

  • Work may occur at heights, over or near water, and in confined or restricted spaces.

  • Exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, and airborne particles associated with construction and marine work.

  • Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation.

  • Surfaces may be uneven, slippery, or unstable (e.g., steel decks, scaffolding, gangways).

  • Work may require use of ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and temporary structures.

Compensation:


Candidates are placed into the appropriate classification based on their experience, skills, qualifications, and certifications. The classifications and corresponding pay ranges for this role are:



  • Journeyman: $26.00–$28.49/hour

  • Tradesman I: $28.50–$32.00/hour

  • Tradesman II: $29.50–$40.00/hour
