Commissioning Team Lead

An established MEP consulting engineering firm is seeking a Commissioning Team Lead in Charlotte or Atlanta to lead projects, develop staff, and grow its commissioning practice. This opportunity combines hands-on technical work with team leadership, client relationships, and business development.

The ideal candidate understands how building systems should perform, enjoys solving problems in the field, and wants meaningful influence over the direction of a commissioning team. The position can be based in Atlanta or Charlotte.

What You’ll Do

Lead Commissioning Projects
• Manage the commissioning process from planning and design review through construction, functional testing, and final documentation.
• Develop commissioning plans, specifications, checklists, functional performance test procedures, and final reports.
• Review drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, and sequences of operation to identify performance concerns and coordination issues.
• Conduct and oversee field observations, system testing, troubleshooting, and verification of corrective work.
• Evaluate HVAC and mechanical systems, building automation and controls, and their interaction with other building systems.
• Review testing, adjusting, and balancing documentation and coordinate with contractors to resolve deficiencies.
• Maintain issue logs, communicate findings, and track outstanding items through resolution.
• Support building turnover, operator training, and documentation of system performance.

Lead and Develop the Team
• Provide technical direction, mentoring, and quality review for commissioning staff.
• Coordinate project assignments, staffing needs, schedules, and deliverables.
• Establish consistent processes and expectations for fieldwork, reporting, and client service.
• Work closely with engineering leadership and project teams to deliver coordinated solutions.
• Remain actively involved in technical execution while developing the capabilities of others.

Grow the Practice
• Build and maintain relationships with building owners, facility teams, architects, engineers, and contractors.
• Identify opportunities for commissioning and building performance services.
• Prepare proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and project budgets.
• Participate in client meetings, presentations, and business development efforts.
• Help shape the commissioning practice’s growth strategy, service offerings, and operational performance.
• Manage project resources and financial performance.

What We’re Looking For

• Substantial experience in building commissioning, with strong HVAC and mechanical systems knowledge.
• Experience leading commissioning projects and coordinating technical teams.
• Hands-on understanding of functional performance testing, controls sequences, troubleshooting, and commissioning documentation.
• Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, specifications, and TAB reports.
• Strong client communication, organizational, and project management skills.
• Experience developing proposals, defining scopes, and managing project budgets.
• Interest in building client relationships and expanding a commissioning practice.
• Ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Background

• Degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer license.
• Relevant credentials such as CxA, CCP, or BCxP.
• Experience with independent third-party building commissioning.
• Experience with complex commercial, healthcare, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
• Knowledge of energy audits, existing-building commissioning, measurement and verification, or building performance assessments.
