Community Outreach Specialist (DOM General Internal Medicine)

C-Raven is an avatar-delivered computerized smoking cessation and lung cancer screening intervention that includes community health worker (CHW) support. We are seeking a Community Outreach Specialist to join our study team for a one-year research project on lung cancer screening. The primary role of the specialist is to conduct follow-up calls to participants to discuss lung cancer screening and assist with addressing any barriers to screening completion. The specialist may also assist with additional study tasks such as recruitment and maintaining the study database.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• The Community Outreach Specialist will work in partnership with the C-Raven study team to carry out study calls and assist with other study-related tasks including recruitment and database management.
• Open communication with the study team is essential.
• Evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
• The specialist will be required to undergo training on lung cancer screening.

Special Skills and knowledge

• Familiarity with lung cancer screening – we will provide additional training.
• Able to counsel individuals on health-related topics.
• Able to respect privacy and keep participant information confidential.
• Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with specific attention to detail, including ability to follow study protocol and ethical guidelines.
• Able to work independently as well as collaboratively as a team member.
• Outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills with participants, community members, and other team members.
• A friendly demeanor with strong customer service skills.
• Flexibility to work with people from all walks of life.
• Familiarity with the public health community.
• Access to reliable transportation.
• Able to work evenings with variable work conditions.
• Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Office suite (especially Outlook, Word, and Excel), willingness to learn REDCap database management.
• Zoom proficiency
• Will need to complete the required IRB/human subjects research coursework.

• High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
• Two years of related experience.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Community Health Worker (or similar) certification.

Required

• At least one year of experience in working with patients in a health care system, clinical experience and/or knowledge of tobacco use and lung cancer screening, familiarity with motivational interviewing and knowledge of the principles of behavior change, and cultural competency regarding the needs of minority populations.
