Job Description - Consumer Lending Officer

Full-time

Description

About Illinois State Credit Union

Illinois State Credit Union serves roughly 18,000 members across five branches in central Illinois. We are member-owned, which means every decision we make answers to the people who bank with us instead of outside shareholders. Our lending team exists to say yes when we can and to give members a real path forward when we cannot.

About the Role

The Consumer Loan Officer owns the consumer loan application from the moment it arrives to the moment it funds. You will take applications from our branches, the phone, and from online submissions. You will make credit decisions within your assigned lending authority, structure loans that fit the member, and keep approved loans moving so they close on time.

We want someone who can look at a file that does not fit the box, find the structure that works, and explain the reasoning to the member. When the answer has to be no, we want to leave the member with a plan for getting to yes.

What You Will Do

• Take and process consumer loan applications from branch, phones, and online channels.

• Make credit decisions within your assigned lending authority and move files above your authority to the next level without delay.

• Review credit reports, income documentation, debt ratios, and collateral values to determine qualifications.

• Structure loan terms, rate, and collateral to fit member needs and credit union policy.

• Counsel declined and counteroffered applicants on a path to approval. No decision ends without a next step.

• Responsible for documenting loan decisions, counter offers, and adverse action reasons.

• Present debt protection, GAP, and mechanical repair coverage on every eligible loan.

• Present deposit products, and digital services based on member needs.

• Prepare and review loan documents for accuracy, then coordinate closing and funding.

• Work a daily pipeline and follow up on pending, incomplete, and approved-but-not-booked applications.

• Meet individual targets for funded volume, decision turnaround, look-to-book, and ancillary product penetration.

• Protect confidential credit union and member information following information security procedures.

• Ensure loan decisions, disclosures, documentation, and member communications comply with credit union policy and applicable lending regulations, including Fair Lending, ECOA, FCRA, BSA, OFAC, privacy, and adverse action requirements.

Requirements

Work Environment & Schedule

  • This is a full-time, on-site position based in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required
  • Must be available to work credit union business hours, including occasional Saturdays
  • Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment using a computer, phone, lending platform, core system, email, and other standard office equipment.
  • The role requires frequent communication with members, branch staff, lending team members, and outside vendors by phone, email, and in-person
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, view a computer screen, enter data accurately, and occasionally lift or move standard office materials
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with additional needs to perform essential functions

What You Bring

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience serving people directly, whether in a branch, a call center, retail, or hospitality.
  • Comfortable explaining terms, numbers, and decisions to members in plain language.
  • Ability to listen to a member's situation and ask the next question instead of reading from a script.
  • Accuracy under volume, and the discipline to work a pipeline without being reminded.
  • Willingness to learn consumer credit and carry lending authority.
  • Ability to be bonded.

Preferred:

  • 2 years of consumer lending, underwriting, or comparable financial services experience.
  • Working knowledge of consumer loan products and the credit factors behind an approval or a decline.
  • Credit union or community bank lending experience.
  • Experience with indirect or dealer-sourced auto lending.
  • Familiarity with collateral valuation, titling, and lien perfection.
  • Track record selling ancillary loan products without pressure tactics.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field.
