Job Description - Controller

TITLE: Controller


 


Exempt / Non-union / Full time / In-person                      



Reports to: Executive Team



Position Summary: The Controller is a key financial leader and close partner to the Company’s Executive team, responsible for overseeing all accounting operations and financial reporting activities. This role ensures the delivery of consistent, accurate, and timely financial information while establishing efficient, scalable accounting processes across the organization. A forward-looking and proactive leader with construction industry experience, the Controller plays a critical role in driving financial planning and strategy. By analyzing individual projects as well as overall company performance and risk, the Controller provides insight and guidance that supports informed decision-making, profitability, and long-term organizational success.  


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):



Financial Leadership & Oversight



  • Maintain continuous awareness of the Company’s financial position and proactively assess, manage, and mitigate financial and operational risk.

  • Provide recommendations on financial planning, strategy, and major business decisions to support profitability and long-term growth.

  • Participate in the development of short- and long-term financial objectives, including profit and growth targets.


 


Accounting Operations & Internal Controls



  • Provide leadership and oversight for all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, billing, payroll, collections, cash management, project accounting, and financial records.

  • Establish and continually improve accounting policies, procedures, workflows, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, scalability, and compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure ledger accuracy, financial integrity, tax compliance, and effective coordination with external accountants and outsourced finance functions, as applicable.

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, consistently meeting reporting deadlines.


 


Financial Reporting, Forecasting & Cash Management



  • Prepare and present timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; analyze financial performance, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow to provide insights and recommendations to leadership.

  • Develop and manage company budgets, forecasts, operating plans, performance metrics, variance analyses, and working capital requirements.


 


Project Accounting, WIP & Construction Financial Management



  • Provide oversight of all project accounting activities, including job costing, billing, revenue recognition, profit projections, and monthly WIP reporting.

  • Partner with Project Managers to develop, monitor, and analyze project budgets; investigate and resolve cost, billing, and margin variances.

  • Lead the monthly WIP review process with project management and accounting teams, including preparation, reconciliation, and posting of required journal entries.

  • Ensure Project Management teams are trained in and understand job cost accounting practices.


 


Systems, Technology, & Team Leadership



  • Lead and develop the accounting team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement while ensuring accurate and timely financial information.

  • Implement and optimize enterprise accounting and project management systems, including Sage 300 CRE, Sage Paperless, Sage 300 Payroll, SAP Concur, GC Pay, HH2 Timekeeper, Microsoft 365, and related platforms.



EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience within a construction environment, including at least 3 years in a Controller role or leading project accounting functions.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration, or a related field; MBA or equivalent business experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated management and supervisory experience, including leading and developing accounting teams.

  • Strong working knowledge of construction accounting practices, including job costing, WIP reporting, billing, and revenue recognition.

  • Experience with Sage accounting software or other construction-specific accounting systems preferred (Sage 300 CRE a strong plus).

  • Working knowledge of construction lien laws preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook), with advanced Excel skills preferred.

  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment, ethical behavior, and confidentiality at all times.

  • Adaptable, flexible, and resilient, with the ability to respond effectively to changing business needs.

  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Full-time exempt employees begin accruing PTO on the first day of employment. PTO usage is available after the completion of 90 days of employment. Accrual is based on length of service and earned per 80-hour pay period.

This position has an annual salary range of $140,000-$180,000. The actual salary offer will be carefully considered based on a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience. The range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
