ABOUT OUR DISTRICT:

The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals.

 

The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.

REPORTS TO: Chief of Family and Community Engagement and Director of Family Engagement

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Coordinator of Family Engagement supports the implementation of districtwide family and community engagement initiatives designed to strengthen partnerships between the Syracuse City School District, families, and the broader community.

This role is responsible for coordinating outreach activities, supporting engagement programs, and assisting with the development and execution of events and partnerships that increase family participation and access to district resources. The Coordinator works closely with the Director of Family Engagement, school-based staff, and community partners to ensure engagement efforts are well-organized, responsive to community needs, and aligned with district priorities.

The Coordinator also supports data collection and reporting efforts to evaluate program effectiveness and improve outreach strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinate and support the implementation of family engagement programs, events, and initiatives across the district
  • Assist in organizing and executing community outreach events, workshops, and districtwide engagement activities
  • Support the development and maintenance of partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and public agencies
  • Serve as a point of contact for families and community stakeholders, providing information about district programs and resources
  • Assist with the planning and distribution of communication materials, including flyers, newsletters, and digital content
  • Track participation and engagement data and assist in preparing reports to evaluate program effectiveness
  • Identify and communicate community needs and feedback to the Director of Family Engagement
  • Coordinate logistics for events, including scheduling, materials, and vendor communication
  • Support volunteer recruitment efforts and assist with volunteer coordination activities
  • Provide outreach at community events, including tabling and presentations
  • Collaborate with school-based staff and Family Engagement Facilitators to ensure alignment and consistency of efforts
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Good knowledge of family and community engagement practices and outreach methods
  • Good knowledge of culturally responsive and equity-focused engagement practices
  • Working knowledge of program coordination and event planning
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and timelines
  • Ability to collect and track data and support basic analysis and reporting
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with families, staff, and community partners
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to engage diverse audiences
  • Working knowledge of communication platforms, social media, and outreach tools
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Sound judgment and responsiveness to family and community needs

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Communications, Social Work, Public Administration, Community Development, or a closely related field
     

AND
 

  • Three (3) years of experience in community engagement, outreach, program coordination, family services, or a related field

     

PREFERRED:

  • Experience working in a public school district, nonprofit, or community-based organization
  • Experience supporting events or outreach initiatives
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills (preferred, but not required)

 

SALARY: Competitive salary and benefits per the Unit 11 Contractual Bargaining Agreement
