Custodian

SUMMARY

The Custodian performs routine cleaning and custodial duties to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment for parish operations and activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and functions outlined herein are representative of the types of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. • Performs general custodial duties, including cleaning, sanitizing, trash removal, and maintenance of restrooms, kitchens, cafeterias, and common areas. 
• Performs detailed cleaning and sanitizing tasks in various facility areas, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment. 
• Cleans floors using appropriate methods and equipment, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, buffing, and vacuuming. 
• Performs physically demanding custodial tasks requiring the use of heavy equipment and tools. 
• Cleans and maintains furniture, fixtures, windows, walls, and equipment. 
• Removes trash by emptying waste containers; transports materials to designated disposal or recycling areas. 
• Uses cleaning chemicals and equipment safely in accordance with established safety guidelines and procedures. 
• Reports maintenance and safety issues and assists in addressing minor concerns as needed. 
• Responds to emergency or hazardous situations (e.g., spills, broken windows, damaged locks) to prevent injury or further damage. 
• Requisitions supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties. 
• Moves heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually or with appropriate equipment. 
• Sets up, arranges, and removes furniture, equipment, decorations, ladders, or scaffolding to support parish events and activities.

CATHOLIC FAITH

Requires an appreciation and respect for the Catholic Church and its teachings. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Prior experience demonstrating the ability to safely and effectively operate custodial equipment and perform the physical requirements of the role is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

• Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently 
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment 
• Ability to perform physical tasks in a variety of environments 
• Attention to detail and reliability
• Ability to use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely in accordance with established procedures

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in indoor environments and may require work beyond a standard 8-hour day, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

PHYSICAL and SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the ability to perform physically demanding work, including climbing up to 15 feet and balancing, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials up to 30 pounds.
