Under general direction of Pathology management, the Cytogenetics Lab Supervisor oversees the daily operations of a highâcomplexity cytogenetics laboratory, ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable testing that supports critical patient care decisions. This role provides both technical expertise and leadership, guiding staff, managing workflow, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory and quality standards. The supervisor plays a key role in advancing the department’s mission by optimizing laboratory performance, supporting continuous improvement, and facilitating effective communication with clinical and administrative partners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversees daily laboratory operations, including workflow management, scheduling, staffing, and workload distribution, to meet turnaround time expectations for routine, STAT, and ASAP testing.
Provides technical leadership for cytogenetic testing, supervising karyotyping, FISH, and microarray workflows for constitutional and hematologic samples; troubleshoot complex technical issues and resolve operational errors.
Supervises, trains, and develops laboratory personnel, conducting competency assessments, performance evaluations, timekeeping review, and ongoing mentorship to support a highâperforming team.
Ensures full compliance with CLIA, CAP, and state regulatory requirements, maintaining quality assurance records, participating in proficiency testing, and validating new methodologies, equipment, and workflows.
Reviews and prepares patient results, ensuring accurate cytogenetic nomenclature and complete documentation in the LIS prior to director interpretation and final signâout.
Maintains and improves laboratory documentation, including creating, updating, and implementing SOPs; performs statistical and quality analyses to identify trends, shifts, and analytical errors.
Facilitates effective communication with medical providers, administrative and laboratory leadership, and internal departments regarding technical issues, training needs, quality initiatives, and operational updates to support highâquality patient care.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Cytogenetics and ASCP certified
Qualified as a Cytogenetics Technologist, with at least 3 years of full-time experience as a Cytogenetics Technologist within the preceding 10 years
Five years progressively responsible experience as a Cytogenetics Technologist, performing laboratory testing and evaluation duties, or equivalent, is required. In addition, a minimum of one-year lead worker responsibility, overseeing the work of Cytogenetics Technologist and laboratory support personnel is required
Total Rewards The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position.Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
