Education/Experience      


Education: Minimum of high school diploma or the equivalent; Experience: Requires a minimum of six years of experience in vehicle maintenance and electronic system repair.  Requires working knowledge of tools, equipment, and safety protocol applicable to vehicle and equipment repair work.  The equivalent education, training, skills, knowledge and experience may be considered.


 


Position Summary: This is a skilled laborer position that performs preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel- and gasoline-fueled City vehicles and equipment by performing the following duties.


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Other related duties may be assigned.


 


Diagnoses problems and determines parts, equipment, labor, and time required to perform repairs on vehicles and equipment to put them in operative condition.  Completes PO tickets. Operates/drives repaired vehicles to verify conformance to specifications.


 


Repairs damaged vehicles and equipment, including installing new ignition systems, aligning front wheels, changing or recharging batteries, replacing transmissions and other parts, and overhauling gas or diesel engines.  Provide roadside repair service. City vehicles and equipment include: Front End Loaders, Lawn Mowers, Garbage Trucks, Diesel and non-diesel City Owned Vehicles


 


Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil changes and parts lubrication. Examine protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on vehicles, and make adjustments.


 


Order and maintain adequate vehicle and equipment parts inventory; record and maintain vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance records including costs. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion.


 


Operate a variety of hand/power tools and machines such as a drill press, hand drill, grinder, saws, air tools, hand tools, cutting torches, and MIG welders.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration and moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risks exposure to electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  Incumbent may also be asked to work outside, which may expose him/her to loud noises, vibrations, and extreme weather conditions.  Incumbent is required to wear gloves, safety-toe shoes, safety glasses, welding glasses, and rubber gloves, and hearing protection when required.
