Job Description - Director of Counseling Services HV-NTP-8354


Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. HVCC offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Hudson Valley is one of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and serves nearly 9,000 students each year. The college is a recognized leader in career and transfer preparation, workforce training initiatives, distance learning and service to a diverse population of students. Hudson Valley has an extension center in Malta, NY known as HVCC North and sponsors the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center in Troy, NY. To be considered an applicant for this position you must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in this announcement. HVCC does not support Visas. Applicants must be either a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States and appointment will be contingent upon completion of a background check.


Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education Counseling, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university required. Must possess and maintain a current New York State license as a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible post-licensure professional experience in counseling, mental health services, student development, or guidance services in a higher education setting required. Demonstrated commitment to student success, wellness, equity, and inclusion. Evidence of innovative and strategic leadership, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to develop and implement programs responsive to evolving student needs. Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners. Experience with crisis response, case management, and interdisciplinary collaboration required. 



Pertinent Other:


Experience with clinical supervision, training graduate interns, and/or managing professional staff preferred. Familiarity with electronic health records, assessment practices, and applicable federal and state regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA as applicable, Title IX, and related compliance standards preferred.


Occasional evening and weekend hours are required to support student programming, crisis response, outreach initiatives, and college events.


Nature and Scope of Duties:


The Director of Counseling Services reports to the Dean of Student Development and/or their designee and performs the following duties:


1.    Provides visionary leadership, and direction for Counseling Services staff to effectively deliver services and initiatives that promote and support student mental health and development.


2.    Provides clinical and administrative supervision of Counseling Services staff and graduate student interns.
3.    Administrative responsibility for Counseling Services includes but not limited to setting strategic vision and priorities, researching and implementing evidence-based practices, unit assessment, and budget preparation.  
4.    Maintains awareness of and implements industry evidence-based practices, follows data trends, interprets professional journal research, technical procedures and regulations.  
5.    In collaboration with other Student Development offices, develops and implements comprehensive counseling and wellness programs, presentations, events and outreach throughout the year. 


6.    Delivers confidential individual and group counseling services, maintains accurate and compliant clinical documentation and provides leadership and support in crisis intervention and response. 
7.    Cultivates collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders to support student needs, and partners with external agencies to coordinate and facilitate appropriate referrals. 


8.    Refers students to appropriate academic and student affairs departments to provide guidance and support for students.


9.    Develops and facilitates ongoing training and consultation for faculty and staff on matters related to student development and mental health related concerns.

10.    Performs other related duties as assigned.


This is a 12-month, Full-Time position with a starting salary of $75,000. Position will begin June 2026.
