Job Description - Director of Fabrication

Polk Mechanical is a leading mechanical construction and service contractor in Texas, known for tackling complex projects with excellence, safety, and integrity. As we continue to expand in the DFW market, we are seeking a Director of Fabrication.

 

THE POSITION

The Director of Fabrication supports the strategic, long-term planning of Fabrication across all Polk Operating Units. This
position is closely tied to supporting, improving and growing the Polk Fab Shop, but is also the main point of
communication regarding the strategic use of 3rd Party Fabrication partners. This role is tasked with engaging on all Polk
Projects very early on, to identify prefabrication opportunities, evaluate them, identify the cost vs gain of the fab, and to
start planning out that Fabrication work during the first months of the project. They will work closely with Project Teams
to help them effectively execute Fabrication Plans, ensuring the VDC Team Members are involved early to help the BIM
Process be more effective. This position will also have oversight of the Polk Fabrication facility, to guide strategic
planning regarding Polk Fab Shop staffing, equipment purchasing, and flow of work through the facility. The Fab Shop
Manager will report directly to the Director of Fabrication. This position reports to Vice President of VDC & Fabrication.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES



  • Lead company prefabrication strategy by partnering with project, field, and VDC teams to identify and execute prefab opportunities early.



  • Review scopes, schedules, and contract documents to define effective fabrication approaches.



  • Guide project teams through prefab execution from design through shop production and field delivery.



  • Oversee coordination between fabrication shop, projects, purchasing, VDC, and field operations.



  • Lead the fabrication shop through the Fab Shop Manager, ensuring safety, quality, productivity, and capacity alignment.



  • Manage production planning, workflow optimization, and prioritization of fabrication requests.



  • Track productivity, quality, and delivery performance and drive continuous improvement.



  • Champion standardization, LEAN practices, and operational excellence across the organization.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS



  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).



  • Lean, PMP, or trade certifications preferred.



  • OSHA 30 (or ability to obtain).



  • NCCER (Pipefitting/Plumbing) preferred.



  • PMP, CM-Lean, or similar certifications a plus.



  • Welding certifications beneficial but not required.



EXPERIENCE


  • 10+ years in mechanical construction, fabrication, or manufacturing, including 3+ years in leadership


  • Proven experience managing a fabrication shop or prefabrication program.



  • Strong collaboration with project teams, field leadership, and VDC/BIM.



  • Demonstrated success with process improvement and Lean methodologies.



  • Experience with budgets, equipment selection, and capital planning.



SKILLS & ABILITIES



  • Deep understanding of piping and plumbing systems, fabrication techniques, spooling, welding processes and mechanical construction processes is required. 



  • Experience translating BIM/VDC models into shop-ready fabrication packages.



  • Effective leader with strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.



  • Ability to manage capacity, resources, and multiple project priorities.



  • Proactive, adaptable, and able to drive a prefab-first culture.
