Summary

The Director of Mortgage Operations leads the operational functions of the mortgage division, including processing, closing, post-closing, and servicing delivery. This role is responsible for operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, risk management, service delivery, process improvement, and team leadership while supporting mortgage production and customer experience goals

 

Responsibilities and Expectations

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Operational Leadership


  • Develop and execute operational strategies that support mortgage and organizational objectives

  • Oversee processing, closing, post-closing, and servicing delivery.

  • Establish performance standards and monitor productivity, cycle times, service levels, quality, and operational efficiency

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, scalability, automation, and technology

  • Partner with Mortgage Sales, Mortgage Underwriting, Risk, Compliance, and leadership to align operational priorities


Risk, Compliance & Quality


  • Ensure mortgage operations comply with company policies, regulatory requirements, and investor guidelines

  • Oversee quality control activities, audits, examinations, and corrective action plans

  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement necessary operational and procedural updates

  • Maintain appropriate operational policies, procedures, controls, and documentation


Financial & Service Performance


  • Manage operational budgets, staffing plans, capacity, and resource allocation

  • Monitor key metrics such as cycle times, cost per loan, pull through rates, and service delivery performance

  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiency while maintaining quality and compliance

  • Ensure consistent and efficient experience for borrowers and business partners

  • Partner with sales, underwriting and servicing teams to address escalated operational or customer issues


Team Leadership


  • Lead, coach, and develop a high performing mortgage operations team

  • Establish clear expectations, performance standards, and accountability

  • Support employee development, succession planning, and professional growth

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, responsiveness, accuracy, and continuous improvement


Required Skills & Education

 

Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field preferred

  • Advanced degree or relevant industry certifications a plus

  • 10+ years of mortgage operations experience across areas such as processing, underwriting, closing, servicing, or operational leadership

  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing mortgage operations teams

  • Demonstrated experience improving processes, workflows, technology, and operational performance

  • Strong knowledge of mortgage operations, investor requirements, underwriting guidelines, and servicing practices

  • Knowledge of applicable mortgage regulations, including TRID, RESPA, HMDA, and ECOA

  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making abilities

  • Experience with mortgage LOS, servicing platforms, workflow systems, and operational reporting

  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills

  • Ability to lead effectively in a fast paced, high-volume environment
