Job Description - Electrical Engineering Advisor (Substations & Protection)

What You Can Expect

At ENGIE, we are accelerating the energy transition by building utility-scale renewable energy projects across North America. Our team designs and delivers wind, solar, and energy storage facilities that power communities and protect our planet.

We are looking for an experienced Electrical Engineering Advisor – Substations & Protection to lead substation and protection & control engineering across our utility-scale renewables portfolio. In this role, you won't just review designs, you will help define engineering standards, influence major equipment and procurement decisions, and shape how projects are designed, built, and operated. Working closely with Development, Engineering, Construction, Operations, EPC partners, and equipment suppliers, you will make a direct impact on the reliable delivery of clean energy infrastructure across North America.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of substation and protection & control specifications, standards, and design requirements across utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects

  • Manage external engineering firms and EPC subcontractors to achieve the highest standards of engineering quality and project execution

  • Direct design reviews of high voltage substations and transmission protection schemes, including relay one-lines, three-line diagrams, ground grids, and wiring diagrams

  • Develop and update internal engineering standards in collaboration with Operations Engineering to drive continuous improvement and standardization

  • Coordinate engineering design efforts with EPC partners and owners’ engineers, reviewing submittals and ensuring alignment with project requirements

  • Support procurement in running RFPs and managing long-lead material acquisition such as main power transformers and HV breakers

  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for substation and protection engineering, providing guidance on emerging technologies, industry standards, and regional transmission requirements across ERCOT, MISO, PJM, and CAISO

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution; concentration or demonstrated experience in power systems engineering preferred

  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in electrical substation engineering and design supporting utility, transmission, renewable generation, or industrial power systems, including experience with high-voltage substations (69kV+ preferred, 138kV+ strongly preferred)

  • Proficiency in protective relay coordination and settings calculations for HV and EHV transmission systems

  • Experience performing power system analysis, relay coordination, and protection studies using tools such as ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, PSS®E, PSLF, or similar software

  • Knowledge of engineering standards including (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI), and reliability frameworks (NERC/FERC)

  • Working knowledge of protective relay platforms, including SEL and GE systems

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, vendors, and project teams

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus, not a requirement
