What will you be doing in this role?

The Electron Microscopist functions with general direction from supervisory personnel. Responsibilities include performing routine and technical electron microscopic procedures requiring knowledge of advanced scientific principles and technical skills and well-developed problem-solving capabilities, as well as assisting with the collection of renal biopsies. Activities include operating and maintaining equipment and resolving technical and quality problems. Additional duties include general and administrative support functions necessary for the routine operation of the laboratory. Performs all job duties with attention to the developmental issues of the patient populations(s) being served.

  • Receives/picks up specimens, accessions specimens into logbook and/or computer, generates E number, processes tissue, embeds tissue in media, sections tissue using specialized equipment, stains slides and grids, loads EM scope.
  • Operates temperature monitoring system and documents corrective action.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment such as tissue processors, ultratomes, automated stainers, ovens, fridges, freezers, incubators, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Attends to routine operational and support functions such as preparing solutions/reagents/buffers, stocking supplies, disposing of reagents and hazardous materials, and maintaining and storing tissue blocks/slide samples and records.
  • Performs daily instrument/equipment/reagent/buffer function verification and documents daily in preventive maintenance logs, according to establish policies and procedures.
  • Uses, follows, and documents appropriate standards for test methodology quality controls.
  • Accurately identifies specimens and labels samples completely, using at least two identifiers where appropriate, at each step of the laboratory process to ensure patient/specimen safety and quality outcomes.
  • Documents Non-Conforming Events (NCEs), initiate problem-solving activities, resolve discrepancies, and take corrective action procedures.
  • Documents review new/existing policies and procedures to keep abreast of changes.
  • Recognizes basic problems in test methodology, quality control and instrument function and, with consultation from a technical resource, initiates problem-solving activities and corrective action procedures.


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree/College diploma from an accredited electron microscopy training program.
  • One (1) year of experience in electron microscopy or equivalent, under supervision of a licensed pathologist and certified technologist is preferred.
