Embedded DevOps Engineer

Job Description - Embedded DevOps Engineer

Embedded DevOps Engineer

Location: Onsite | East Falmouth, MA

Work Authorization: U.S. Citizenship

Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain a Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance

Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits

The Company & Mission:

Join a mission-driven defense technology company building advanced AI/ML-enabled maritime sensor systems for national security operations. This team develops integrated software and edge hardware platforms that are actively deployed in support of U.S. Navy operations — including systems aboard nuclear submarines.

The organization operates with a flat, engineering-first culture where hardware, software, and mission operators work side by side to rapidly build, test, and field systems. Engineers own outcomes, not just tasks.

This is an opportunity to do infrastructure work that matters — where the pipelines you build directly accelerate the deployment of systems operating in real maritime environments.

What This Role is All About:

This role sits at the intersection of embedded software engineering and DevOps infrastructure. You will own the CI/CD, HIL/SIL, provisioning, configuration, and deployment systems for Spear AI's firmware and embedded software stack — and you will serve as the connective tissue between the hardware team in Falmouth and the broader cloud-focused software organization.

This is not a remote-only, pure-cloud infrastructure role. You will go to sea. You will participate directly in buoy deployments and at-sea testing operations multiple times a year. That field exposure is not incidental — it's the mechanism by which this role makes the software better. The pipelines you build will be informed by what you observe on the water.

The ideal candidate combines deep infrastructure expertise with genuine comfort at the hardware-software boundary — someone who can own a Pulumi stack and also troubleshoot a provisioning failure on an embedded device in the field.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Own and develop the CI/CD, SIL, and HIL testing pipeline for Spear AI's embedded software

  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code (Pulumi preferred, Terraform acceptable) to automate provisioning, configuration, and deployment of embedded software systems

  • Bridge cloud-based software systems with embedded hardware platforms to accelerate automation and error-checking across the full deployment lifecycle

  • Evaluate, improve, and ship enhancements to existing provisioning and configuration systems — with production impact expected in the first 60 days

  • Participate directly in at-sea deployments and field testing — deploying, recovering, and troubleshooting buoy systems on small boats in open water

  • Translate general system requirements into actionable software tasks and infrastructure architecture

  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and the cloud software team to deliver integrated, production-ready systems

  • Mentor junior colleagues as the embedded team grows

What You Bring:

  • Expert in Infrastructure as Code — Pulumi strongly preferred, Terraform acceptable

  • Expert in Docker and Kubernetes

  • Expert in CI/CD and DevOps with GitHub Actions

  • Expert in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing

  • Proficiency in AWS and/or other cloud services

  • Proficiency in Python or TypeScript

  • Strong networking fundamentals

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity compliance frameworks — CMMC, PCI, SOC, or equivalent

  • Experience deploying to air-gapped environments

  • Experience self-hosting on bare metal servers

  • Experience working in a Linux environment — this is a hardware/software integration role; prior embedded or Linux experience is required

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills — you will work across two teams and communicate complex tradeoffs clearly

  • Physical ability to participate in at-sea operations: lifting and handling equipment on a small boat, fine hardware manipulation underway, clear communication under field conditions

Bonus Points:

  • Maritime operations experience — small boat handling, over-the-side equipment work, field logistics

  • Prior military service or experience working with military customers and personnel

  • Experience with embedded IoT systems or sensor hardware

  • Familiarity with cross-compilation, embedded build tooling (CMake, colcon, ament), or containerization for ARM targets

  • Background in digital signal processing or acoustic sensing systems

Benefits:

  • Equity participation

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Unlimited PTO — Take the time you need to recharge and maintain work-life balance

  • Dedicated sick time

  • 11 paid holidays

  • Paid parental leave

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage

  • Performance bonuses

  • Referral bonuses

  • Technology stipend for home office setup

  • Professional development and certification reimbursement

  • Relocation assistance (Position Dependent)

  • Mission-driven work — contribute to systems that directly support national security operations
