Job Title: Embedded Systems Engineer

Job Summary

System Level owner to lead the integration, configuration, and validation of embedded software within MCU-based automotive controllers. This role operates at the intersection of firmware, controls (model-based development), and vehicle integration, ensuring software is correctly built, configured, and validated for production release.  The System Engineer is responsible for facilitating the integration of the mechanical, electrical and control systems of a propulsion or driveline system.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to identifying, defining, and characterizing the connections between these systems and executing the functional, performance, and safety goals.

Responsibility

• Integrate firmware, middleware, application software, and configuration data into complete ECU builds.
• Own build generation, versioning, and release packaging across multiple vehicle programs.
• Maintain and improve build systems, integration scripts, and continuous integration / continuous development pipelines.
• Validate memory layouts, software configurations, and calibration data prior to release.
• Ensure alignment between software branches, feature content, and vehicle program milestones.
• Integrate model-based functional software components into production ECU software.
• Ensure proper definition and implementation of software interfaces across application, middleware, and hardware layers.
• Collaborate with controls engineers to integrate and validate auto-coded algorithms (Simulink/Coder).
• Support software architecture integration, whether AUTOSAR-based or custom platforms.
• Verify correct interaction between control algorithms, drivers, and system services.
• Support software in lab, HIL, and vehicle environments.
• Validate end-to-end system behavior including bootloaders, diagnostics, and communication stacks (CAN-FD/LIN/SPI).
• Troubleshoot integration issues across firmware, controls algorithms, and hardware interfaces.
• Support ECU flashing, software updates, and vehicle-level deployment activities.
• Partner with calibration and vehicle teams to resolve issues identified during testing.
• Work closely with firmware, controls, hardware, validation, and systems engineering teams.
• Ensure all software inputs (code, models, configs, calibrations) are aligned and integration ready.
• Support interface alignment, feature integration, and system-level behavior consistency.
• Coordinate with suppliers and internal teams on software deliverables and integration dependencies.
• Investigate integration failures, ECU instability, communication issues, and unexpected system behavior.
• Perform log analysis, trace debugging, and diagnostic evaluation (CAN traces, DTCs, etc.).
• Drive root cause analysis across software layers and system interfaces.
• Track defects and ensure resolution through cross-team coordination.
• Manage software baselines, version control, and traceability from development through production.
• Maintain configuration management practices aligned with ALM tools (e.g., Polarion or similar).
• Ensure proper documentation of releases, feature content, and known issues.

• Support change management and impact analysis across integrated systems.

Academic/Educational Requirements

Four-year degree in engineering or technology related field from an accredited Institution and 5 - 10+ years of experience in embedded software integration, development, or validation.

Required Skills/Experience

• Strong understanding of embedded systems and software architecture, including real-time systems, application software integration, bootloaders and flashing, diagnostics (UDS, DTCs), and automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet).

• Experience integrating software into MCU-based automotive controllers (ECUs).

• Familiarity with model-based development (MATLAB/Simulink, Coder) and auto-code integration.

• Ability to understand control algorithms and their interaction with hardware and vehicle systems.

• Hands-on experience with build systems, scripting, or automation (Python, shell, CI/CD tools).

• Strong debugging and system-level root cause analysis skills.

• Experience supporting software bring-up in lab, HIL, and vehicle environments.

• Familiarity with configuration management and ALM tools.

• Strong collaboration and communication skills across cross-functional teams.
