Description of Work

Are you looking for a WILD job? Do you love working around nature, animals and working with passionate people who support the natural world. The North Carolina Zoo is looking for a motivated Emergency Telecommunicator to play a vital role in the safety and operational flow of the Zoo. This position is responsible for answering and processing calls for service throughout the 2800-acre Zoo. Operators are also responsible for monitoring fire and security alarm systems, as well as monitoring camera systems throughout the Zoo. This role requires flexibility, as scheduling is based on departmental needs and may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Strong communication, organization, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for success in this role. Position also provides administrative support for the Emergency Operations Manager.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $47,508.00

Management Prefers:

     • Demonstrated experience answering and processing calls on emergency and non-emergency requests

     • Demonstrated experience in documenting and writing reports with accuracy and detail, including record-keeping

     • Demonstrated experience coordinating emergency incidents through radio communications in a professional manner

Position / Physical Requirement: 

• Must be able to work a rotating, 7-day schedule including weekends, holidays and/or weekday evening or nightly special events outside the normally scheduled hours
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be able to see and hear to enter data and respond to radio communications
• Must be able to obtain certification by the Association of Public Communications Operators (APCO) within one year employment
• Must be able to obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification within one year of employment
• Must be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED certification within one year of employment
• Demonstrated ability to dispatch and communicate with personnel in a clear and efficient manner

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference 

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application. 

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. 

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
