Job Description - Energy Engineer: Measurement and Verification

Position Overview

Harris Energy Solutions, LLC (HES) is a nationwide Energy Consulting Services firm. HES offers a full suite of consulting services, including Building Energy Modeling, Renewable Energy Consulting, Master Planning, Energy Audit, Building Commissioning, Measurement and Verification, and Building Retro-Commissioning. We pride ourselves on the work we perform and the services we provide. HES is hiring an Energy Engineer specializing in Measurement and Verification (M&V) to join our team.

The Energy Engineer (Measurement and Verification, or M&V) will plan and execute M&V activities to quantify energy and demand savings for retrofit projects, utility incentive programs, and Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs). This role focuses on rigorous, defensible savings calculations in accordance with IPMVP and program-specific protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Develop M&V Plans: Author project-specific M&V plans following IPMVP Options A, B, C, and D, tailored to project scope, savings magnitude, and program requirements.

  • Establish Baselines: Collect, clean, and analyze pre-retrofit utility bill data, sub-metered data, BAS trends, and operating schedules to develop defensible baseline models.

  • Specify and Oversee Metering: Identify required metering points, specify and source data loggers and meters, coordinate installation, and validate incoming data streams for quality.

  • Perform Post-Installation Verification: Conduct site visits and spot measurements to verify equipment installation, operating conditions, and as-found schedules; document any commissioning or operational issues affecting savings.

  • Calculate Verified Savings: Build regression models (whole-building, hour-of-week, change-point) and engineering calculations to quantify energy, demand, and cost savings, including weather normalization where applicable.

  • Author M&V Reports: Produce baseline reports, savings reports, and annual reconciliation reports for clients, utilities, and program administrators; clearly communicate methodology, assumptions, and uncertainty.

  • Support Utility Incentive and ESPC Programs: Prepare incentive application packages, respond to program reviewer comments, and support performance guarantees on ESPC projects.

  • Data Analysis and Tooling: Use Excel, Python, R, or other tools to process large utility and interval datasets; apply statistical techniques such as regression, residual analysis, and outlier detection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Facilities) or related quantitative degree

  • 1-3 years of experience in M&V, energy analytics, utility program implementation, or energy engineering, including at least one internship, co-op, or full-time role

  • Working knowledge of IPMVP, ASHRAE Guideline 14, and FEMP M&V Guidelines

  • Experience with regression analysis and weather normalization (e.g., NMECR, CalTRACK, ECAM, or equivalent methods)

  • Strong Excel skills required; experience with Python, R, or SQL preferred

  • Understanding of HVAC, lighting, controls, and renewable systems

  • Familiarity with utility tariffs, interval data formats (Green Button, ESPI), and BAS trend extraction

  • Experience with large commercial and multi-family buildings preferred but not necessary

  • EIT, CMVP, or CEM credential preferred (or willingness to obtain within first year)

  • Travel throughout the United States as required by project workload

Personal Qualifications

  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills

  • Passionate about mitigating climate change

  • Collaborative and a strong team player

  • Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and pay attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment

  • Enthusiasm to learn and grow as a professional
