Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

Engineer II/III: Project Engineer for the Transportation & Project Management Division

Come join the Transportation Division for an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that is delivering transportation infrastructure with the City of Virginia Beach.

This advertisement may be classified as an Engineer II or III, based on qualifications and experience of the selected applicant. The selected candidate will be part of a team of talented engineers working in the Transportation Division of City Engineer’s Office. The selected candidate will perform a variety of duties of a complex nature related to transportation engineering and project management. Types of projects include:

• New Roadway Alignment
• Roadway Widening
• Intersection Improvements
• New Traffic Signals and Replacements
• Bridge Replacements
• Sidewalks, Shared Use Paths and Trails
• Stormwater Projects

Representative work functions may include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in the overall project development including planning, design, engineering, and construction support.
• Review project plan or studies for various infrastructure related projects, including conceptual design, preliminary engineering reports, cost estimates, design calculation or computations, exhibits, plans, drawings, and specifications.
• Apply project management techniques for various project to ensure projects are delivered within its scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
• Manage projects from inception through construction completion.
• Prepare reports and maintain document records.
• Assist in bid and contract management for design and construction.
• Assist in preparing material for public meetings.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the preferred qualifications for this position are listed below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.:

• Roadway design experience
• Project management experience
• Cost estimating and scheduling experience
• Contract administration experience
• Construction experience
• Public and private utility relocations experience
• Familiarity with property acquisition processes
• Experience with VDOT/FHWA design standard, specifications, codes, policies, and procedures

Minimum Requirements:

Engineer II Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field with possession of an E.I.T. (Engineer In Training) Certificate and two (2) years of progressive professional experience.

Engineer III Minimum Qualifications Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field with possession of a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the Virginia Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) and five (5) years of progressive professional experience.

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
