Job Description - Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering

WHY JOIN ALO?

Mindful movement. It’s at the core of why we do what we do at ALO—it’s our calling. Because mindful movement in the studio leads to better living. It changes who yogis are off the mat, making their lives and their communities better. That’s the real meaning of studio-to-street: taking the consciousness from practice on the mat and putting it into practice in life.

About the Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering to lead teams responsible for building and operating the core platforms, cloud infrastructure, and developer tooling that power a high-scale, high-availability eCommerce ecosystem.

This role combines technical leadership, people management, and cross-functional collaboration. You will help shape platform strategy, guide architectural decisions, and enable engineering teams to deliver reliable systems safely and efficiently. While primarily a leadership role, this position values hands-on technical engagement to stay close to the systems and challenges teams face.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the platform engineering strategy, setting technical direction and multi-quarter roadmaps aligned with product and business priorities.

  • Lead cloud and infrastructure engineering, including compute, networking, storage, and infrastructure as code, with a focus on scalability, reliability, security, and cost awareness.

  • Guide platform architecture and critical technical decisions, ensuring systems are resilient, maintainable, and capable of supporting future growth.

  • Own DevOps and CI/CD practices, improving build, test, deployment, and release workflows through automation and continuous improvement.

  • Anticipate and address systemic risks, proactively identifying and resolving platform issues before they impact reliability, performance, or security.

  • Build and maintain shared platforms and developer tooling, enabling application teams to safely operate and evolve systems at scale.

  • Strengthen observability and operational practices, including monitoring, logging, alerting, and incident response to support operational readiness.

  • Partner closely with product, architecture, security, and application teams, aligning priorities, managing tradeoffs, and communicating risks and dependencies.

  • Lead and develop cross platform engineering teams, providing mentorship, clear priorities, and an inclusive, collaborative environment that supports growth and delivery.

  • Participate in hiring and team development, helping build and sustain a strong engineering culture.

Qualifications

  • 7+ Years of professional experience in software engineering with a focus on platform, infrastructure, or DevOps

  • 3+ years of experience in an engineering management or technical leadership role

  • 7+ years of experience and knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar)

  • Experience with distributed systems, containerization, orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code

  • Experience owning or supporting CI/CD pipelines and automation

  • Ability to lead architectural discussions and make data-informed technical decisions

  • Strong communication skills and experience collaborating across teams

Preferred

  • Experience supporting high-scale or consumer-facing platforms

  • Background in Java/JVM-based systems and cloud-native architectures

  • Experience with multi-region or multi-cloud environments

  • Familiarity with open-source technologies and ecosystems

  • Experience building or operating internal platforms or developer experience tooling

  • Knowledge of observability, reliability, and service ownership practices

The base salary range for this position is $188,000-$235,000 per year which represents the current range for the base salary for this exempt position. Please note that actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. As such, on occasion and when applicable, there is the possibility that the final, agreed-upon base salary may be outside of the upper end of the range. Please also note the range listed is just one component of the company’s total rewards package for exempt employees. Other rewards may include performance bonuses, long term incentives, a PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.
