General Description:
The Engineering Technician III reports directly to the Engineering Department Manager and provides technical support to engineers. This position requires strong knowledge of the methods and equipment utilized to produce custom mixed rubber compounds, molded rubber and composite products, or oxygen breathing hose as applicable to the assigned department. Responsibilities include supporting the development of new product and the execution of new or difficult jobs, resolving manufacturing problems and issues, and training personnel on manufacturing techniques. The position requires a hands-on innovative type individual able to produce high quality products working under general supervision. This individual must be able to communicate well with operators, engineers and managers within the Company.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support product development
Set-up, execute and closeout engineering jobs to meet quality, schedule, and efficiency requirements
Train operators and technicians on manufacturing procedures
Perform corrective action, preventive action, and improvement activities
Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
Some knowledge of science or engineering
Preferably two years of technical school, two years of college toward a Bachelor of Science degree or related technical training (e.g. military/trade school)
9 years related progressive experience as a technician within a manufacturing setting.
Special Projects related experience – The processes and equipment associated to molding, hand lay-up, and bonding of rubber and composite products
Mill Room related experience – The processes and equipment associated with internal mixing, open milling, calendering, and extrusion of rubber compounds
Hose Department related experience – The processes and equipment associated with the manufacture of communication cables and rubber oxygen breathing hose including building hose, soldering and swage of end fittings
Proficient in reading manufacturing drawings, the use of mechanical inspection equipment, and the application of shop math
Mechanically inclined
Good verbal and written communication skills
Specific Tasks and Focus Areas:
Support product development
Support conceptualization and design of tools and processes
Consult with engineering during development efforts and make recommendations for improvement
Set-up work area, identify needed fixtures and shop aids
Build prototype parts using judgement and limited process direction
Generate accurate process notes and maintain data
Write or outline procedures and submit to the engineer
Support the development and execution of qualification plans
May design and conduct evaluation tests and experiments, record data and present written or oral reports
Set-up, execute and closeout engineering jobs to meet quality, schedule, and efficiency requirements
Gather and review technical and quality documents associated with the product to be manufactured
Set-up tooling, equipment and the work area
Manufacture product in accordance with prescribed procedures and submit to Quality Assurance
Execute product travelers
Maintain a clean and well-organized work area
Control and maintain applicable material inventory and shelf life
Tear down and store tooling, equipment, paperwork and the work area
Train operators and technicians on manufacturing procedures
Identify need for training courses and contribute to course content
Provide training to operators and technicians on production procedures, methods, and the operation of tooling and equipment
Support cross training efforts
Perform corrective action, preventive action, and improvement activities
Troubleshoot problems and issues related to product quality, tooling, and process efficiency
Review manufacturing processes and recommend changes to drawings and procedures
Investigate the cause of product defects and recommend corrective actions
Identify processes which may cause product defects and recommend preventive action
Support Lean Manufacturing methodologies
